Help! - Trying to spruce up our new home...

Hey Guys,

My husband and I recently bought a ranch style home and were having some trouble on how to make it cozy and welcoming. The space is kind of small but we are open to ideas of how to change the attitude of this home.

We don't plan on changing the vinyl out of the bathroom / kitchen / dining area yet but plan to in the near future

We both like color - but not overly bright colors - I think our main issue is being able to marry things with the wood accents and tying them together where it would actually work and look good - since we do like the wood accents

We need help!! ideas!! advice!! something.. lol

blues and greens usually play well with the orangey tones of wood.

It's probably the starkness of the white walls that make it feel cold. Do you have favorite colors, colors you detest(pink and lavender for me), or a color scheme you'd like to use (warm neutrals, greys, etc.)? SW kilim beige and nomadic desert (have them love them), accessible beige, balanced beige, bm revere pewter, shaker beige, and manchester tan are popular colors.

If you choose a neutral background for the walls, lose the border and get new light fixtures, you can accessorize with brighter colors in manageable amounts and change it as you wish. You could also switch out the laminate for a color and pattern with a little more pizzazz for a moderate amount.

How long has the house been empty? While I would definitely paint a nice neutral to freshen and warm it up, sometimes a house just needs a new loving family to breath life into it again.

If they're not strong, it won't matter, Spruce, since the ones like that are few in number - I've got 5 1/2 wooded acres. I've seen lots of odd things with trees since the hurricane. There are several small trees that were bent over, and for whatever reason, I didn't right them. They've developed new main trunks/leaders that grow straight up - it looks like in the future, the bent over part will just be an insignificant lower limb on the trees. There are also some bent over trees that are developing lots of new growth that grows straight up along the bent over part. I've left these, because they make the woods more interesting, at least to my eye - I may plant some vines to grow over some of the bent over trees. Many rose growers force branches to grow laterally so that the sunshine hitting the limbs will cause many new straight up stems, all with roses - this is the same thing, just natural! I had a catalpa tree before the hurricane that was completely destroyed. It grew back from the roots about 5' or 6' away from the original trunk, and grew straight up about 12' tall in one year. It finally made one branch in the summer - I hope it'll branch out more this year! Sherry

Yes, this is a very easy fix with color on the wall. Yes to a backsplash and yes to paint. Think about painting the ceiling too. Pull the colors from the granite to design the backsplash and then go deep with the wall color to blend in the cabinets rather than have them stick out so starkly. The floor tile already looks good with the cabinetry so that's in your favor. Here is a before of my kitchen ... clearly it wasn't finished in this photo, but what I want you to notice is the paint color. The cabinets look flat even though there's color on the wall. Shortly after we moved in, I repainted to the deep rust color and suddenly the graining and the richness in the wood appeared. I'm sure your kitchen will be a real Wow! once you add some saturated color.

Pace, we seem to be twins! I also bought a 100 year old beat up 3200 sq ft house in Kentucky. My utility bill last January was $650, and that was after new windows, doors, etc. We had expected much better performance after spending tons on the renovation & so that bill motivated me to investigate our options. We have a gas furnace in the basement which is ducted to the first floor and a heat pump heat/ac unit in the attic which covers the upstairs. While the heat pump unit has been great for AC, it had been the driver of high winter bills. We’d had it serviced repeatedly, and they’d change the number of heat strips wired up, but still it didn’t heat that well and was costly. Eventually we learned there was a coolant leak in the outdoor unit & that unit was replaced. We had the utility company come out and do an energy audit and they gave us suggestions on where to insulate and air seal. With attic insulation, air sealing, and lots of HVAC service calls, things seem better, but this winter will be the test.

I just really love those colors @Jess Whisner, the aqua door and the soft shades on the house, and they don't look like anyone else's house. I also think the green lawn color does very well with those. What might be tricky is getting the paint shades so they go together well, but a Benjamin Moore (or similar) store might be able to help you get a pretty combination. Do you have budget for more of a little porch and some wider steps, as in your sample photo? There'd be room for some bright hanging baskets, too. ******** On the shutter question.... There's no fact that legislates how you should/must/have to/couldn't possibly not do shutters on your home. Indeed, certain periods of American architecture do have a shuttered style like yours, and yours is entirely in keeping with the 1960's, whether the Architectural Digest or some designers on this forum like it or not. For an 18th century colonial home in New England, I'd want to do shutters that fit the windows, because that was functional and not merely decoration. These shutters kept wind and storms out because glass was much thinner, and there were no storm windows. That's my opinion, but it also is a matter of historical verisimilitude.

The house has been empty for about 2-3 months now - still haven't put any furniture in it until we figure out what we want to do with the walls or the place entirely-- I totally agree with you about the fixtures being replaced and the white walls making it feel extremely cold

I will go get some paint chips this weekend and see how the beige / neutral tones will balance out the walls- I'm more of a neutral person that won't mind an exotic hint of color here or there
