Breakfast bar or counter height (behind sink)?
Comments (14)Fori, we're on a slab. My contractor said we could look into it, but there might be concern about not having enough rise for the drain pipes... ? I don't know anything about plumbing. He seemed hesitant, but then again, he's not a plumber. I've tried googling, and it sounds much more complicated to move a sink (even the 3' we're looking at here) than you make it sound... But again, I know nothing about plumbing. Sjhockeyfan and Annkh, I can't tell you how many times I've tries to figure out a way to straighten that arm out. It just doesn't really work. Either it gets too short to accommodate a sink and DW with appropriate landing space for dishes, or it ends up poking into the dinette area too much. Mayflowers, we already have a walk-in pantry. I currently have the slanted uppers in corners, but I actually like them. They hold an awful lot of stuff. But I have been considering doing away with them because I think it will look cleaner. I go back and forth. I really don't think cutting a new window or moving the sink to the other side of the kitchen are in the budget. Also, I like it on the wall it's on - it works well for me. One way or another, I think I'm leaning towards taking out the breakfast bar....See MoreKitchen Under Construction-Breakfast Bar Input
Comments (2)No; I'm not committed to any particular table. we have a hand-me-down circle table that has a leaf making it into an oval. I just drew up what we will live with until our budget recovers from the build! :-)The dining room is just beyond the refrigerator, so we will eat there and at the breakfast bar. The kitchen table is for homework, family games, and puzzles that no one ever makes me put away so I can set the table!...See More? for Raised (Breakfast) Bar Owners
Comments (6)mimom26 - Yes, one of my 3 is a little one and he has no problem getting up, staying up or getting down. The saddle stool seats are nice and wide from side to side so they are very stable - my guy most frequently sits on his knees and he's never wobbled or fallen. Ironically, in our last house I had big beautiful stools and having the backs to rest up against made the kids more comfortable to push their feet on the backside of the island - this led to one of them tipping the back-heavy stool over backwards, gouging my plaster wall, denting my walnut floor and splitting the carved wood back of the stool right down the middle! We broke the rest of the back off and left the stool that way for quite some time, calling it the "seat of shame" and I can say that the boys never "reclined" in their stools again!! Here's a pic of those stools at the counter: I'd also say that I hated having "arms" on the stools because they got very chipped and marred from banging into the granite island top!...See MoreHow about a lower breakfast bar?
Comments (4)Why do you need 40" Get a prefab 36" and there is still 11" of overhang and that is sufficient. That is exactly what I had in my last home and never had any issues and my husband was 6'3. If you are unsure get a piece of cardboard or other flat material and place it on your current bar and sit on a stool and see how it works for you. Wider is nice if you can afford custom, but most people I know are more pre-fab budget people and they are perfectly okay with their counter seating with a 36" wide counter....See Moresnarkyinla
