Where is it? Is it a street planting, or does it does it look like it's come up naturally? If a street planting the local council might know about it. But the more information and photos you can provide here the easier it will be for someone to identify it.

Can't tell leaf arrangement on the stem very well from your photos. They almost look opposite. If opposite and if no typical 'sweet gum' smell (and no spiky 'gumballs' on the ground around it), it could be a maple, for example, Hedge Maple, Acer campestre. If so, then leaf form must be quite variable. Most photos show rounded tips.

Location helps to narrow it down. I'm near Darwin, so a bit out of my area. It doesn't have that Syzygium look to me. They're usually referred to as Lillypillies down your way. The ones here are called Bush Apples, the fruits get up to about apple size. Let's hope someone can solve the mystery.

One of the orange twigged cultivars of Cornus sanguinea that became prevalent on the market awhile back. Since my recollection is that the normal green leaved versions of the same species do not tend to show this same kind of browning in this area I've tended to assume it was sun damage to the yellow parts of the otherwise paler green than typical leaves of these orange twigged forms. Your second picture might also tend to confirm this, as it appears the damage is confined to the yellow portions of the leaves and not the green. Various partly yellow or white horticultural forms of conifers may also do this, with only the palest parts of the foliage being subject to browning by full sun exposure - or perhaps frost in some instances.
