Comments (5)Unless you decide to go with an induction cooktop, I would definitely get gas. Cooking with gas burners gives you so much more control than electric. Whether to go dual fuel is a bit more of an issue particularly since it costs a good bit more. Some people prefer electric ovens for baking but a good gas convection oven will bake just fine and will actually be better for roasting meats. Comments (14)I maintain that a good cook or at least a decent one or better can cook on anything. There's snobs out there and I won't get into the debate with them over gas vs. electric. I'll take a good electric stove over a junk gas one any day. There's advantages to both. There's a learning curve to go from one to the other. The one big benefit of electric is, assuming of course you're reasonably matching the burner size, the heat goes to the pan rather than up the sides like on gas so you can use more of the power. I use gas at the lake and camping. Have had electric at home for 35+ years and used gas at home prior to that. I've used gas stoves at other peoples' homes and I've used electric stoves at others places too. They all are a little different and it's up to the cook to adapt to it and I don't find it all that difficult. Some will. The cautions I've heard from people with the glass tops are to be careful to not drop cast iron on them or you'll have an expensive repair. I had a Corning top stove for a lot of years. I replaced it with a basic coil GE stove about a year ago. Response time is basically as good as gas for my use and I'm a much happier cook with it. Gas does *not* give "instantaneous" response as the "gasbags" as I like to call them would have you believe. They still heat the grates and the pans and there's residual heat there too, not that unlike electric. Nitpick all you want, don't fear the stove. Use it. It's a tool and if it's that big a deal to you or if you can't adjust to it, replace it and move on. I thought about running a gas line and going with gas but didn't think it was worth it. Comments (3)Just don't do it with Jenn-Air appliances. I was going to do the exact same thing (36 inch gas cooktop and 30 inch electric oven) until I plugged in the oven and it was very loud. The oven vented out the front and a very loud blower made it sound like a microwave vent was on (nearly the whole time the oven was on bake). The look you wish to accomplish is very clean and custom. I too, had ordered pannels for the sides and it would have made for a very clean, sleak look. It was just not to be for me. I purchased a 40 inch range instead and am pleased with the purchase. Comments (12)Are you going to be using natural gas or LP? I just converted from electric to LP gas a couple of months ago. We don't have natural gas, so we had to have propane installed. Around here, some gas companies only take care of the outside work and a plumber is necessary for the indoor work. I talked to numerous people and got four widely different (in terms of price) quotes from gas companies. I also talked to my plumber in case I needed him to do the indoor work. He recommended a company that was qualified to do the indoor and outdoor work, so I wouldn't need a plumber (very honest of him, I thought!). I ended up going with that company b/c not only did they have the best pricing, but the best customer service. They also handled the permit for me. I only paid somewhere around $650 for the whole install, including a full propane tank, but again, the estimates I got varied greatly. Some were b/w $800-900. Obviously prices are going to vary depending on where you live. BTW, I grew up using electric so this is my first time ever cooking with gas. It's only been two months and I haven't done much cooking (summer - lots of travel as well as grilling), but so far, I'm very happy with my LP range!...See Morelucillle
