Question on shower controls

I am planning a master bath remodel and my shower will have a regular fixed shower head and a hand held. I was planning to use this Delta Tesla thermostatic control since I am using that model for my other fixtures - Delta Tesla Shower System. One thing I am concerned about is the stacked placement of the volume and the temp controls. I feel like we could easily hit the temp knob when turning the shower off/on. Other brands (like Hansgrohe) have the two controls totally separate. Wondering if anyone has one like the Delta and finds it to be a problem?

I don't have any experience with it, but agree that it looks awkward to use and you could easily get your hand on the wrong thing. I don't know exactly how it works. My Hansgrohe has only the diverter handle for the different functions, with a little turnkey (like in a doorknob lock) that controls the temp, so it's never a problem getting the wrong thing - although I skipped the volume control in my shower because the water pressure here is so low that there is no way I'd ever want to lower the pressure. It's set to highest volume always.

I have been thinking the same about volume control. We're on a well and pressure is not the best. I really can't think of any reason why I would want to reduce the volume.

I am now looking at doing Hansgrohe instead. We used that at our lake house when we redid the shower years ago and are happy with it. I'm not going to worry too much about about not being matchy matchy.

Unfortunately, the options are: 1. Get the big ugly plate and have a single control. 2. Redo the tile and get an attractive single control setup. 3. Get another three handled set. (Remember that not all three handled sets are interchangeable--the spacing needs to be the same to use the existing holes, or you'll still have tile problems.) I'm in a similar situation. Old valve is leaking, not quite ready to do full bath reno yet, so it looks like another threesie for the moment.

Dornbracht Cost, IIRC, about $1500. The plumbing gods were not slow to punish our hubris. Two issues developed. It has 2 small integral check valves. Grit was keeping them open causing hot to flow into the cold. Never could get cold water in the master bathroom sink in normal conditions for a year until we fixed this recently. Had to let the cold run for about 25 seconds in the kitchen as well. Since this fixture is so rare, contractor did not install tile to allow proper access to valves, so he had to hack away at tile beneath escutcheon. The main cartridge needed to be replaced. The problem was that if all 3 shower heads were on, or the valves were opened too suddenly, or the water was turned toward cold, the water would become freezing cold and had to be turned off and on again. This is a $500 part, but was covered under the 4 year warranty. These problems are tricky to track down. A licensed plumber refused to help him with this (we did not know how the hot was getting into the cold, and his experience told him how frustrating that could be to pin down), so my contractor trouble shot it himself, consulting with me several times. Nothing looks better. And now that it works properly it's a joy to have. But beware the high end, and doubly beware the ultra high end.

That faucet is a Moen Monticello with the common moen positemp rough in valve. Here is a web address to a pdf of the instructions for this faucet. http://www.moen.com/shared/pdf/instruction_sheets/ins2033.pdf There is an adjustable temperature limit stop underneath the handle (if the installer put it in) made out of white plastic. You need a small hex key wrench to loosen the set screw on the underside of the handle, and there is another piece under the handle held on with a phillips head screw. Take that off and you will see the limit stop, if it is there. It is actually 2 pieces that mesh together like gears, and depending on the way you position the 2 pieces together is how far it will let the handle turn (turning the handle counter-clockwise, the hotter the water gets). to set it so the handle can go all the way as hot as it will get, put the pieces together so that the 'tabs' are lined up together, and insert the pieces back into the metal piece that they were in with the tabs straight up. When you put the piece on there that the handle screws onto, rotate it to turning the water on and you will see how that works. If there is no limit stop pieces in there, or after adjusting it, it still does the same thing, then it is a problem with the cartridge. Either there is something stuck in there or a defect in it. The cartridge is under the limit stop. You will need to shut off the water in order to pull that out. The differences are: One volume control plus diverter (depending on which diverter chosen) is you can operate any combination of the three fixtures independently or any combination of any two together, but at the same volume as the control is set to. Advantage, is lower price of material, less rough in work, less openings in shower wall. Disadvantage, more rough in work, less overall control. Having three volume controls will allow each fixture to be controlled independently so you can have all three fixtures on at once and be controlled at any volume setting independent of each other. Advantage, better overall control. Disadvantage, higher price due to one more fixture needed and more rough in work, one more opening in shower wall. In the end, more openings in shower wall can be dealt with easily so it's just a matter of cosmetics. Also the rough in work isn't much more when adding another fixture, therefore it's a minor disadvantage.

I've never once wanted to turn the volume down in my shower...many times I wished it could be increased! I don't think you'll miss that control at all.

We have Delta and our setup looks like the photo. In ours, the top handle is the diverter. It has three positions -- showerhead, half showerhead and half handheld, and just handheld. We've been using it about 6 months and have never shifted it from half and half.

The bottom set controls volume (the larger handle) and the smaller handle, the temperature. Its easy to turn the water on, without affecting the temperature handle (the smaller one). Both from standing in front of the controls (for example in the shower) and from the side (I like to turn it on before getting in).

So yes, we have that, use it, and the temperature is not so easily moved that it is bumped out of place when using the volume control. I like it!

Hmm. Now that I think about it we also have that setup in other bathroom with a showerhead, handheld and tub spout -- so 5 way diverter and volume/temp -- that also works very well. If users can agree on a temperature, then that stays put and all one has to do is turn shower on. (Big "if" in our house. ;-)

ETA: adjusting the volume doesn't affect the temperature. We have low water pressure so pretty much go full blast all the time, but if one did move the volume, that doesn't affect the temperature setting.

I had a similar Delta faucet and always left the temperature at the same level, and then just turned the shower on and off with the back lever. We were on well water, so we didn't have the greatest pressure and I always turned the volume all the way up. I don't ever remember a time that the front adjustment (temperature) got moved. It wasn't that sensitive to adjust.
