Has the temp in your garage been above the low 40s? If so, that's likely the cause. I've linked to a thread from 2009 that provides some helpful info on how to keep figs dormant. Hi Map1e, I'm doubtful that your tree was grafted. Although your tree could've been grafted its more work for the nursery and why would they do that when a fig does fine on its own roots? I would suggest that you try to root some of your cuttings or if you have any suckers come up pot those up and compare them to the mother tree. If its grafted the suckers and the cuttings that you took will be different. Either the fruit color or leaf structure would be different. Would it be a robust plant if you air layered.... Yes, the fig would have a good headstart if you air layered a section of your 10 ft tree and cut it down to 6ft you would have a 4 ft tree instantly...well almost, you'd have to have roots develop first. I guess that your current option for propagating more trees would be to root some cuttings. Good luck, Little John

Ingevald, Enjoy the near miracles. So far`I had not experienced any such miracle. When my cuttings die they are really dead. But there is always hope for the next time. However, I did save one rooted cutting from sure death today. I had bought three cuttings of "Native D Argentile" and one of these rooted well and I had transferred it to a 32 oz clear plastic pot along with a few more rooted cuttings. The pots were half burried in soil and in dappled shade. All other plants were showing good progress except this "Native D Argentile" which had better roots than the others when transferred to 32oz pots but it was neither growing nor dying. After 3 or 4 weeks I decided to move all these rooted cuttings to 1-gallon pots. When I lifted the half burried pot of "Native D Argentile" from the soil it felt heavy. I noticed that 3/4 of the pot was full of water (raining for more than week) and noticed that I had potted it in 32 oz pot with no holes! I guess it was very timely to change the pots today and it can be counted as a near miracle that it did not die with roots in water. The next day or two will show if the roots are helping the plant to perk up and start growing like the others.

Thanks for the input everyone. I don't have any mature figs in containers, so all of my fig trees are in 'one basket' so to speak. I did spray them with Wilt-Pruf last week, but I don't know if conditions were ok to polymerize the substance. This may have had the effect of making me feel better, rather than actually helping the figs. My smallest is a 1-year old Desert King - last night I wrapped in in a towel and overturned a garbage can over it. The temperature was about 22F at the time. It usually doesnt get "too" windy here. Since most cold damage is supposed to be from dessication, there is some hope with that thought. From CRFG: "Fully dormant trees are hardy to 12°-15° F, but plants in active growth can be damaged at 30° F. Fig plants killed to the ground will often resprout from the roots". From "Italian Fig trees": "They thrive in areas where winter temperatures do not drop below 15°F (-10°C). Very young trees can be damaged by fall frosts...below 25°F (-4°C)." Purdue: "The tree can tolerate 10°-20° of frost in favorable sites." We'll see. I'll be very bummed out if they die.
