A fig tree has sprouted on it's own - will it survive?

I'm shocked and amazed and so school-girl happy I can't stand it....a fig tree has sprouted in the pool enclosure. Clearly had to arrive from one of the many birds that live in my 6 foot tall azaleas surrounding the pool. I really just let the ferns around the pool go all summer and almost never pull weeds. Thanks to an injury I didn't use the pool all summer. Imagine my surprise to find a 4 foot fig tree growing happily in one corner! I have deer and rabbits like crazy so it's just a perfect spot for it. Now.... how do I help it survive?! When should I expect some actual fruit? How do i determine the type?! :) I'm in zone 7A (in Cabin John, MD and within walking distance of the Potomac river). I'll of course be searching all over the internet but though this might be an excellent resource. Thanks in advance. I'll add a photo tomorrow when I can get out there.
