Comments (13)jeanwedding: I didn't say it was easy .LOL. You actually have to hunt them down as they flutter all over the yard and then finally land on some foliage. Then you have to sneak up on them -- they're very sensitive to YOU. BT's the way to go, though. It's the young(caterpillars) that do all the damage. I just try to swat the adults to lessen the outbreak of future generations. Kevin...See MoreNow they have gone too far!
Comments (16)You know, it doesn't make any difference to me how processors want to adulterate a standard product if I KNOW it has been changed and therefore have options to buy a different brand. But to have lobby groups addressing agencies to ask to change a publicly perceived product and use the name associated with the old product is hogwash. I have a son-in-law who is morbidly allergic to onions and onion products. You are going to find them in practically everything processed. I made chicken and noodles, scratch of course, to give him an alternative to other foods with onion in it, and then when the broth was just not quite rich enough, decided to add chicken stock from cubes. Mistake. After it was a done deed, I thought better of it, and grabbed the jar to read it to make sure it was just chicken stock. NOT! The list of ingredients was a mile long, and low and behold there were the dehydrated onions. Although I wasted a whole morning making noodles and cooking it, at least he didn't end up in the emergency room in anaphylactic shock. What could have happened, however, was have it labeled only as a natural seasoning. The public does have a right to know. We accept a lot of stuff, feeling powerless to do much about it, save not buy it, but we do have a right to know what we put into our bodies. Nobody should mess with that....See MoreVirginia forests - too far gone??
Comments (14)Instead of focusing on how many non-native plants you have and how much work it will be to get rid on them, instead maybe you can focus on adding or protecting the few native plants you have left. In practice, the two approaches can be pretty similar - both require you to cut and remove non-native plants - but the latter approach might be a bit less frustrating. If you have a few native plants, protect them by removing those invasive plants that are crowding or shading them. Perhaps add a few new native plants and protect them. As the native grow and spread, you'll gradually clear larger and larger patches around them, and hopefully the presence of established, stable native vegetation will inhibit the return on non-native plants to the areas you've cleared. A big part of the problem is probably disturbance, which could include physical disturbance, excessive nutrients, or the invasive plants themselves. As you pull out one invasive plant, you disturb the soil allowing another (or more of the same) plant to sprout. Most of the native vegetation is adapted for growth in very stable conditions. As a woodland soil sits undisturbed with native plants growing in it, soil fungi grow and help prevent the spread of plants not adapted to the environment - most non-native invasive plants would fall into this category. So, if you can create small, stable patches of vegetation they might become fairly stable and resist new invasions by invasive plants. The stable patches might take a few years to become established, and they would have to be large enough (I am not sure how large, but 50 feet across seems like a minimum), but it might work, and creating a small refuge would be a lot more realistic than clearing the whole property at once. Good Luck!...See MorePainted outlets- have I gone too far?
Comments (28)carecooks asked: "I know that the plate isn't difficult, but what about the outlet itself. Is that a big deal to change (er, meaning costly since I'm at the end of the remodel)?" They are both easy--the outlets are inexpensive--under $1 for 'regular' outlets and about $3-4 for 'decora' outlets. It is definitely a task many people do themselves. It does help to have a couple of (not too expensive) tools, including a 'tester' to ensure that the outlet is really powered off before you start to removed it and is wired properly after it is replaced. If you still have a GC around, you can ask him if he'll switch them if you pick them up at HD or Lowe's :-). It doesn't take more than 5 minutes or so to swap out an outlet. If you were near here, I'd do it for you!...See MoreMare TN z7a
