About how much do you think I should cut it down? To the edge of the door? A little longer? Thanks!

Do you really need a rug there? What about a mat(2' x 3')?

Isn't the rug going to get pushed by the door? Doesn't look there is much clearance. I'd look for something stiffer if there is clearance.

A carpet store can cut and bind your existing rug for you, but it looks really flimsy for your purposes.

Honestly, have you considered a very functional industrial mat for inside your door. It will protect your floor and it looks functional, yes, but that is OK in a small area. Ballard Designs has some very pretty practical floor mats that you might consider.

If not that option then you probably want about six inches all the way around. Put tape on floor to the six inch border size and go from there. You can also buy a remnant and have the rug cut and bound to size.....but first play with the tape to find a size you like.

The rug, not including the fringes, is 27x51", 3" longer than the listing stated online. It is also quite thin, so even with a little no slip mat under it the door should still have clearance. Anything much thicker simply wouldn't work.

I don't know if a rug is *needed* but all the articles I've read on how to make your entryway look "nicer" have said it's important to have one... Something to the effect of an entryway rug "setting the tone for your home". Unfortunately, this area is small and awkwardly oriented.

Is that the closet next to the front door? The rug should cover both doors since they are right next to one another - it will look better. So either have it only covering one door, or buy a larger one for both doors.

That is a bedroom we use as an office and then there is the bathroom at the end of the short little "hall" there. In my eyes, our entryway "ends" at the thin strip of wall between the doors. It's such a horribly awkward and tight space.

I ended up sending the rug back. I mulled it over the weekend, folded the edges under, moved it around into various positions, but I just don't think cutting it down would ever make it "right".

While this is way more expensive than I wanted to spend for something that will get stomped on by wet dirty shoes, this mat seems to actually be about the right size for the entry area at 35x35". What do you all think? And what color? I am thinking navy but maybe the charcoal or blue stone? Thanks.
