Long Island Bedroom Gets a Sophisticated New Look
An affordable rug, furniture and art pieces leave room in this New York couple’s budget for custom window treatments
Color palette. Before the makeover, the bedroom had a heavy feel due to its deep red, rust and hunter green color palette, and the homeowners wanted to go lighter and brighter. The fabric for the lumbar pillow on the bed served as inspiration for the room’s palette of gray tones with hits of coral.
“Gray is such an easy color to work with,” says designer Byers, who used several variations here. The north-facing room gets a lot of sunlight, so Byers felt confident it could handle a deep gray paint and not look too dark.
The homeowners saved inspiration photos on Houzz that had neutral colors and a few bright splashes in a colorful pillow or ottoman, showing Byers that they wanted an injection of concentrated color. “Something that took the room from being very tonal and very neutral to kind of just giving it that little pop,” Byers says. Coral fit the bill.
Furniture. The homeowners kept their existing bed frame and nightstands, and Byers focused on remaking the room with the rug, paint and affordable new furniture pieces. She found the bench online for a good price. It originally had an unattractive fabric, but she had it reupholstered with a coral linen-look polyester for a high-end look. “I don’t do it all the time because there’s definitely a difference in quality, but for something that’s just going to sit at the foot of the bed, that was definitely an affordable solution,” she says.

Rug. The 11-by-15-foot area rug is a broadloom, or tufted, rug made from the material used for wall-to-wall carpeting but cut to a custom size. The rug cost about $2,300, including tax. Rugs this large typically retail for more — often much more.
To get the pattern and size she wanted, Byers worked with a local carpet and flooring shop that’s a dealer for the rug manufacturer Milliken & Co. Homeowners could work directly with carpet and flooring shops to source a custom broadloom, she says.
Byers purchased the chairs and side table online. The homeowners like to drink their morning coffee and read here.

Art. The family fell in love with the colors and mood of the art above the mantel, a photograph taken in Santorini, Greece. “Travel has always been a big part of their lives,” Byers says, and the wife visited Greece shortly after college, when she was living in Europe and teaching English in Prague. The designer found the art online.

Window treatments. The window treatments are custom and the room’s biggest splurge. “That’s where the money went in the room,” Byers says. They cost about $2,800.
Though the footprint of the room didn’t change, Byers had the two windows on either side of the fireplace added. The dresser is another piece the couple already had. In total, the budget for this room makeover was less than $10,000, Byers says.

Designer: Christina Byers Design
The couple who own this home on New York’s Long Island wanted their master bedroom to feel modernized and sophisticated, but they also wanted to find ways to save on costs while redecorating and remodeling their space. Designer Christina Byers helped them meet their goals by keeping several furniture pieces they already had and introducing them to a clever way to save on a large area rug. The project also included adding two new windows and redecorating.
Nightstands. Both the bed and the nightstands were in the clients’ collection. But one of the nightstands had gotten bleached by the abundant sunlight flooding into the room, so Byers had them painted gray.
Art. The husband and the couple’s middle daughter made the black-and-white art above the bed.
