Undermount vanity sink sizing help

Hello...

I was looking at a Cabico 48 inch bathroom vanity that has a center door width of 18 inches, with a 15 inch draw (with door below) on each end (15-18-15)

My first designer quoted the Cabico vanity with these adjusted demensions so to give more width to the draws (I didn't know this until I questioned the price difference between 2 different places).

A 2nd designer designed the "same" vanity with a 12-24-12 configuration, as comes standard. This makes the interior draw width around 7-7.5 inches.

I hadn't realized the change the 1st designer made until I questioned why her quote was so much more than the other.

When I asked the 2nd designer to make the change to 15-18-15 she said there would not be enough space for a sink. She said I need a minimum of 24 inches.

I have also had a quote elsewhere on a Decora brand that had 15-18-15 standard from 2 separate designers. Neither these Decora designer or the 1st Cabico designer ever said anything about difficulty of a standard size undermount sink being an issue.

Just when I think I have finally found a vanity that I love, something else pops up!!

Anyone have any any thoughts on this?

in my vanity, I have a 22" center section with the sink being 19-1/4" wide. So that means you could put a 14" or 15" sink in the 18" center section IMHO. That's 1-1/2" on each side for my setup. My cabinet is frameless and I don't know if that makes a difference. I wouldn't think so.

For example this Kohler Verticyl round sink is 13-3/4" diameter, and should fit in an 18" cabinet, using my logic above:

I have the oval one and like it fine. Its contemporary. But I am sure you can get what you need from Kohler and other companies to fit your 18" opening. I'd go for the 18" center, rather than the larger center. I think the larger center will make the side draws too narrow.

Here's my vanity to help with scale. Its 60" wide. Center is 22" and the side drawers are 19". That's about the same ratio your vanity would be with the 18" center.

The Verticyl round would fit in an 18" cabinet, but I think a 13" sink would look undersized in a 48" vanity. A 13" sink is better suited for a powder room where it would only be used for hand-washing. Kohler has all their spec sheets on their website. I looked at their smaller rectangular and oval sinks and didn't see one that would fit in an 18" cabinet. Looks like they discontinued the 15" oval Caxton.

But I would not want 12" drawers, especially only two of them. I could not make use of three cabinet door bases in a vanity because I have more small items than large items, which I'd guess is typical in a bathroom. You could choose a design that has all drawers for the sink base, with a standard 24" sink base. Your top side drawers would be useful for a comb, brush, and dental stuff. Otherwise with an 18" sink base, you'll have to decide whether you want to compromise on the usefulness of the sink or of the drawer storage.

If you could modify the cabinet frame by an inch or so maybe you could make this sink work. The outside dimension is 12-5/8. My daughter has this sink in her bathroom. Nice sink. We would rather have an under mount sink, not a vessel sink. We have found a couple of smaller sinks (Nantucket). It is just under 11 inches deep (front to back) for the basin and and 12.87 inches deep total. It is also less wide. (19 inches total). We were hoping the Toto would fit.

What are your countertops? If you are getting custom stone or manufactured quartz tops, then check with the people who will be installing it. It sounds like you are not using a bath designer, who would do this already. The installer will have a set number of inches of stone that they want for the counter top front, and how much room they need behind the sink for the faucet (unless you are doing wall-mount faucets). Figure out what business you will be using to order the counters through, and talk to them about these clearances. Sometimes you deal with the stone yard directly, other times you order through a design showroom. The bigger the sink, the fewer drips and splashes to wipe off the countertop!

Kohler Caxton is available in either 17 x 14 or 19 x 15. That extra inch front to back may be a problem. The molded overflow on the underside of the front of the sink may prevent a new cutout from being moved forward and the entire inch may have to come off the back of the existing cutout. The thick wide rim of the sink on the underside may cause problems in mounting the faucets. I would accept what you have, chalk up to Lessons Learned & live with it. If you sell, then it will be someone else's problem (that they probably won't even notice) or you will change it in a few years when you decide to refresh the look and get a new countertop. Not that it would be a huge expense to change it now, starting all over with new counter material. And even a different style of sink; I really like the rectangular sinks, personally.

I figured out by talking with designer #1 that the dimensions of the 17 x 14 kohler 2210 sink, at its widest point includes what she called the flange, which lies "flat" against the underside of the quartz vanity top. This is what makes it 19.25 at the largest point. The part of the bowl that goes down into the base is 17 inches wide at its widest, and she was not at all concerned about it fitting. I can only assume that this will fit based on that.

So then I went to the counter fabricator and they feel that that kohler sink will fit, but they will know for sure when they come to template. In that case, if it does not fit, they would use the the smaller 15 x 12 Kohler 2209 (17" at that largest undermount area).

I looked at the sink while there. So I think it just depends on how high the draw box itself is to the top of the cabinet...and I would imagine the draw box wouldn't be flush with the top of the cabinet.

I have an old style top mount sink so I measured my current sink opening and it is 15 x 10 !! So even the smallest sink i mentioned above is bigger than my current, so now I'm no longer worried about that! Whew, that's a win! LOL
