Comments (68)Drinking cranberry juice might be helpful in controlling UTIs. Taking cranberry supplement pills probably won't be. âÂÂThere is an active ingredient in cranberries that can prevent adherence of bacteria to the bladder wall, particularly E. coli,â says urologist Courtenay Moore, MD. âÂÂBut most of the studies have shown that juice and supplements donâÂÂt have enough of this active ingredient, A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), to prevent bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract.â Overall, clinical studies on the efficacy of cranberry juices and extracts for the prevention of UTIs are conflicting. In 2012, the Cochrane Data Base identified 24 studies comparing cranberry products (juice or extracts) to control or alternative treatments. The review found that compared with placebo, cranberry products did not significantly reduce the occurrence of UTIs. The effectiveness of cranberry was not significantly different to antibiotics for women. Also, because supplements are not regulated by the FDA, it is not known how much of the active ingredient each product contains. Therefore, many of the products may not have enough of the active ingredient to be effective in preventing bacterial adherence to the bladder wall." I drink a concentrated cranberry juice (much stronger than the usual bottled cranberry cocktail), although not for UTI prevention. I don't know what its PAC content is, though it's likely significantly higher than in cranberry juice cocktail mixes. Comments (13)Laurie, Thanks for your suggestions, but I will not switch to canned food. I've seen what it does to teeth. I do brush my dog's teeth frequently, and I give her hard bones to chew on...but I am just not into canned food. I will find other ways to prevent the UTI's. Also, she drinks tons of water as it is. Thanks for your input though. Cynthia, Yes, same dog. That's what my vet said...he said it may be from the neuro issues. I couldn't see why, but the truth is that it's gotten worse since she had the spinal meningioma. She does see a neurologist, and had an MRI 6 weeks ago which showed scar tissue in the area where the tumor was removed (and also radiation was done). Her current neurologist (and also a top neurologist in my state that did the initial surgery) both say that surgery to free up the scar tissue is way too dangerous and probably won't fix the situation, since scar tissue is WAY too difficult to remove...and the surgery could likely end up in paralysis. She also has bad reactions to steroid treatment. So there is nothing I can do "medically". However, she goes to a chiropractor weekly (I know, I thought it was crazy too...in the beginning - but I had to find other ways to help her), and since she has started going she is able to JUMP into my SUV (couldn't do that for 3 years...which was when this all started) and she also immediately stopped having BM accidents (which was a result of the decline in anal tone). So the chiropractor visits are helping. She's also taking a holistic anti-inflammatory pill daily. I started putting water in her food last night as per Laurie's suggestion, and I will continue to do that indefinitely (I hear what you are saying about not letting it soak...I also don't want to do that because that will defeat the purpose of giving dry food for her teeth). And I will go get some cranberry capsules today. Thank you so much for your suggestions - I really appreciate it. Gabi...See MoreBlack Lab - cruddy ears
Comments (8)You don't have to use a prescription diet to start a novel protein diet. None of the foods you mentioned are high-end foods; medium quality at best. As mentioned before, raw diets are best but if that isn't doable then I'd recommend Natural Balance, Solid Gold, California Natural, Wellness, Evo, Taste of the Wild, and other all natural single protein and carbohydrate foods without artificial colors, flavors, or grains. I've been happy with Natural Balance Venison or Fish and potato food, available at most pet stores without a prescription and at much better cost than $180/month unless you are severely overfeeding! The most important aspects of an allergy food trial are 1) choosing a protein and carbohydrate source that your dog has never had before and 2) feeding NOTHING but the diet for 8 weeks before expecting a response. That means no treats, no flavored heartworm preventative or anything for 8 weeks. Cleaning the ears is great, but if they are infected by yeast or bacteria you're going to need medicine, not a cleaner. The only way to tell if there is an infection and what type of infection is present is an ear cytology read by a vet. You can't solve an ear infection by cleaning alone. Also may need systemic antibiotics and/or antifungal medications, topical antifungal and/or bacterial medications, systemic antifungal and/or antibiotic medications, topical and/or systemic anti-inflammatory medications. I tend to use topical and systemic medications as needed based on the cytology, plus systemic and topical anti-inflammatory medications based on the degree of patient discomfort and clinical signs. Most dogs with severe and chronic changes go home on topical, systemic and anti-inflammatory meds, plus the diet change....See MorePet Food for Lab with Allergy
Comments (20)I would recommend going RAW. I have been on the raw diet for a few months now and my girl is doing great. The decision to go raw was made because of the itching, scratching, licking biting, shedding, sneezing and other issues that she was going through and the vet could not provide a reason for the symptoms and would just provide to us advice and meds. I have found after food trials and product eliminations that she cannot take any of the Dry Kibble, Canned Food, Treats, Biscuits, Heartguard or Flea Preventatives, nor can she use most of the shampoos on the market. I feed Natures Variety Raw. We kicked everything to the curb and went cold turkey. My first choice was the Rabbit. She licked the bowl clean and the symptoms were gone almost immediately. I would say within the week the symptoms calmed down. I also learned that when you mess with the omegas in the foods by adding something such as a fish oil, you mess with the balance of the omegas. The best thing to do is find a meat based food with balanced omegas and if you choose to add additional omegas choose one that is balanced. I chose to use Ultra Oil with omegas 3-6-9. Yes, there is a 9. Who would have thought. All and all, after almost a year of food trials, my girl is eating raw, getting oil'd up for a healthy skin and coat and is using Dinovite Canine as her supplement and I will not change a thing for as long as I can help it. Oh! I forgot to mention that because I do not use a flea preventative, i do bathe my girl more often now. How is her coat and skin you wonder? Her coat and skin are great. They say bathing too much will strip the coat and skin of essential oils. Well heck...why not use products with essential oils. I use Dr. Harvey's Shampoo and Dog-O-Suds from Dinovite. Read up on Natures Variety, Ultra Oil, Dr. Harvey's and Dinovite and even check up on the website for the Great Dane Lady...all websites helped me alot. My girl is due for her annual next week and I can't wait for the Dr. to see her. If you want to discuss, give me a shout. kreshalp@yahoo.com...See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA
