What should we do about the worn out brick on our home?

We just bought a home and the brick seems to be a little worn.. there are a lot of white marks on it. Does anyone know the best way to get rid of these? We are also looking to change the shutter and door colors and add more curb appeal to this house. We want to give it more of an updated look. Any advice on colors or what we could do would be greatly appreciated!

Brick is not “worn out”…that was the install design.

My suggestions: remove those blue vinyl shutters…not worth saving...

Leave all the trim white, as it is. Paint the front door white.

Paint the clapboard the gray of the roof.

The word you may be looking for is efflorescence, a white powdery scum that appears on masonry. But the placement of the spots makes me think it's not efflorescence.

I would leave the shutters on. Removing them is going to expose holes where they were attached and shadows where they once were.

There are lots of ways you could go with this. I would paint the vinyl (hardiplank?) gray to match the mortar between the bricks, paint the shutters and arches above the upper windows black, and for the door, either leave it as is, or a teal color, or an autumnal orange that goes well with the bricks (assuming I'm seeing the color of the bricks accurately).

Since you just bought the house, live with it as is for a while and look around the neighborhood at what other people have done.

Congratulations on your new home - how exciting! I would not paint the walls grey/blue/green due to the orange/yellow wood. Those colors would look nice in your home but may feel a little old-fashioned to you. In my opinion, grey has been overdone and it's time for something fresher. I would paint both the walls and the wood trim the same soft white to give it a more modern feel. The trim is not very substantial so just paint it out altogether. Bring in color with your furniture or art. When you eventually replace the flooring you can think about changing the trim too. Look at Benjamin Moore OC-117 Simply White, or perhaps OC-118 Snowfall White or OC-149 Decorator's White.

Have you considered a larger more sheltered entryway? Do seriously consider putting a roof between the left (garage) wing of the house and the right wing of the house for a larger covered portico, and adding porch/portico lighting in the ceiling of the new portico/porch. As you extend the roof, put your support posts literally against the inner sides of the two wings of the house (rather than crowding the entryway with posts closer together). ... By making the roof top of the portico deeper between its upper part (roof/balcony) and its lower part (ceiling), (with or without a railing), you could bridge the distance between the height of the two roof lines.

The brick will come off the floor very easily. I would remove it all, and then decide what to do with it. You can just put an area rug over it for now. That is a tripping hazard for little kids and a fall on that could be very dangerous.

Is your roof old? I note the style of shingles on it and haven’t seen those in recent years. I would consider what colors you might choose for your roof in the future…and then consider a color for your home. (It is usually the reverse! People have a roof color that drives the color choice for their home.).
