Can anyone ID this plant

Neighbor had it growing on an oak tree in Sarasota, Florida. It was growing on a piece of driftwood and ripped off the tree.

He would like to save it but has no idea. He thought it was an orichd but it looks like a bromeliad to me.

Hi everyone.

Jane you are quite right, your plant is a bromeliad, in this case it's a Neoregelia. As for a cultivar name, I'm sorry I can't help as there are many thousands of different hybrids which come in just as many different colours.

I can see though that your plant is of the stoloniferous type (New plants are formed on stolons [like a stalk] which grows away from the central Mother plant and for that reason they make good specimens when grown in baskets.

They are easy to grow either mounted on a tree or grown in a pot or basket using a bark based orchid potting mix.

They don't require a lot of care, and here in temperate Australia I grow them outside under shade cloth or beneath a tree. I find if I just keep a bit of water in the central vase and water them once each two weeks in winter and weekly in summer they seem to grow quite happily.

The two main things to provide are: Firstly a potting mix that is open and free draining as they don't like "wet feet". Secondly room to grow with plenty of circulating air, they don't like to be over-crowded, after all they grow naturally on trees in habitat.

I've had a relationship with Echium vulgare for decades now. I saw it along the highway in Michigan while traveling to Macinac island and those magnetic blue/pink flowers had me. I fumbled around for a few years trying to get seeds and have them germinate, but I finally did and then grew it for decades. ( in various places and sometimes purposefully torturing it!). And of course it seeded EVERYWHERE! I'm trying to attain a 100% native garden and it was troubling me to get rid of it with the bees loving it so much, but my native Canada wild rye saved me the trouble and completely eradicated the mother and all the babies. I love watching native plants beat the crap out of these alien, noxious, invasives! The mulleins and teasle are taking a severe beating too this year with all the rain. VB is like sticky/prickly right? not thorny/prickly? ( how quickly we forget!) lol. :)

Not toxic, as far as I can see, but the seed capsules have a kind of barbs, and they cling to clothing and the fur of animals. Skirts or pant legs can be full of them, and you have to remove them individually. This is the one weed I try to eradicate from my garden every year, but every time some little plants escape me, and its seeds hitch a ride on my pants. Or the fur of my poor long haired cat.

Don't believe everything you read :-) The Galium aparine pops up wherever it feels inclined in my garden - sun or shade, moist or dry. The sweet woodruff does prefer shade, but it is also growing in my garden in very sunny positions as well. I find the sweet woodruff much more aggressive than the cleavers, as it is perennial and spreads primarily via roots.....a very dense and all encompassing flat root system!! Removing a dense planting is a lot like rolling up a carpet :-) The cleavers are an annual and a once-and-done weeding situation unless allowed to go to seed.

i know your new.. and i hope you come back often .. and just as a hint for future posts.. pix in front of a bright window are not the best ... though in this case.. it didnt matter ... pot them up asap ... in fact ... i dont know why those long pieces were rooted .. you can probably cut that long stalk into about 8 pieces and root them up ... very fast.. in media.. check out the link below ... and note .. the best info is found using the proper botanical name... rather than the name of some dive bar in key largo.. lol .. the lucky bamboo... crikey ... lol in general.. if you break off a large piece.. its very hard to root big pieces.. so you research to find out how small you need to go.. to make it easier for the plant to root ... not many plants can move enough water up a very long stem to save the leaves above.. if it has no roots ... this bamboo is probably one of the few exceptions ... ken https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Dracaena+braunii+propagation&t=ffcm&iax=videos&ia=videos
