Layout help - please help make this more than 1 person kitchen
Comments (17)I'm just talking out loud - maybe some stuff applies and maybe it doesn't. I'm looking at the 42" aisles - they are less than the recommended minimum of 48" for a multi-cook kitchen. Some people are sensitive to stuff like that and some aren't. But I think about what cooking with each other AND the swarm in the aisles would be like ... People take the shortest route all the time - its not necessarily the same as the route that would make you happiest. So, there is a certain pile-up of stuff that clogs the route to other stuff - again a little uncertain of "The Way of The Swarm". BUT the ref and the drinks ref create a pile-up on the dining room side, clogging that aisle. The same clog might explode through the work area if DW doors are open and get in the way of table setting operations. People setting the table would need to be under extreme duress (aka, parental intimidation) to walk the dishes around the outside edge of the island instead of cutting through the work zone to the informal dining. It makes for a challenge. I'd be tempted to go more like the below (just an idea). It sorta shows two island shapes, one dotted, one solid - and it certainly would need more thought. So - instead of butler's pantry, I'm thinking scullery. Dish storage can be in wall cabinets above the sink and in one section of the pantry if you've got a lot. The ref moves back out into the perimeter and becomes twins with a nice fat aisle in front - complete with micro for reheating leftovers or melting sandwiches. It has 3 decent work areas plus a 4th in the scullery. It does not solve the cut through traffic to the informal dining, but takes away some of the strain in the aisle. The scullery can be devoted to a bar without impacting the main kitchen. The pantry area can certainly be enclosed and either look like this or push the doorway back over almost to the dining room wall and have one wall of regular cabinets and one wall of 12" deep shelves. It might help start some other thoughts. I'd also try an "L" shape with the leg on the dining side (runs away)...See MoreNeed help with kitchen remodel with white appliances
Comments (2)medium oak floor and medium stained brown base cabinets...I'd prefer either glass doored uppers or white uppers..... or if you want brown uppers intersperse some open shelves....probably light counters and whitish tone backsplash if the white appliances are for the longterm. At the eye level is where you can mix in either open shelves....cabinets without doors....white cabinets... therefore making less of a contrast with ALL white appliances against all brown cabinets. Two toned kitchens are in favour-you have a good opportunity for that approach. The wood species depends on your home and the general style....country?-alder with the knots....modern-quartersawn oak in slab or shaker doors.....rustic?...hickory with stain and glaze can be great....See MoreNovice Remodeler - need help with big kitchen remodel!
Comments (31)Elizabeth, the floors have to go as they look better in photos. In person they scream cheap. It is cheap laminate. I will also have bare spots where the wall will be removed that I have to fix up. I was planning on putting some tile in the kitchen area but may just do hardwood throughout the whole house. I have also heard that the ikea cabinets hold up rather well but it seems that they use quite a bit of MDF with a foil over it. I personally would prefer a wood face as that sees quite a bit of abuse and potential liquid spills (I am just at the beginning with a 3 year old and 1.5 year old)....See MoreKitchen Remodel from Flood
Comments (10)Our thought was to get one of the curved island hoods with glass like the broan in this link http://www.abt.com/mobile/product_images.php?product_id=51032 We would remove the glass and make an opening in the brick the size of the chimney, insert the chimney in the opening and mount the body of the unit directly to the brick. If the curve matches that of the brick, then the brick would server the pupose of channeling things to the blower. The entire upper brick portion is hollow and running the duct to the attic through the wall is something our contractor said could be done. The rest of our kitchen is a u shape with a large island just across from the rangetop area. We really like the layout other than adding more drawers where cabinets are-something we learned from gardenweb when we remodeled the kitchen in our earlier house. They are in the process of building our cabinets in place now. They will be ballet white with the leathered granite below, hardwood floors and a butcher block top on the island...See MoreRuss Barnard
