I see no reason not to be able to read on the internet via Skype or FaceTime. Language classes are conducted that was all the time that way.

Thank you, Rita. I'm just wondering about the physical aspect--how is a book held so both the participants can see and manage with page turns.

It just might be a bit awkward to set up the camera on the kid's side so that the book is visible through the camera and so over the internet connection (using skype or facetime or whatsapp or the cellphone connection or whatever) and also for the kid. Maybe using the back facing camera on a phone or tablet, in a fixed position aimed at the book, and the book perhaps in a book holder, both on a table?

I like Moni's suggestion best for someone learning to read. Also you could print out pages of text on both ends of the conversation. When my children were learning to read I seem to remember a teacher saying that having the parent/teacher looking over the child's shoulder was helpful and encouraging in a way I don't think you could accomplish with the child just looking at the text by herself. So both people looking at the same text simultaneously seems best to me so eye contact can be made of the encouraging, supportive part.

This has been how my children have done things with language teachers over FaceTime in the past, more or less.

We just lived through grandson in kindergarten and 1st grade picking up reading. We were amazed at his particular speed, though antsy with his need to talk about each picture and story development wayyy tooo muchh. How old and what grade is this child?

Didn't kindergarten teachers read to the class while holding the book facing the children?

Yes, people who read to a group of kids often hold the book that way, eld. Done it myself back in my working days.

I can imagine each of you having a copy of the same book. Child reads, you follow in your copy. As child stumbles over a word, you ask the child to hold the book so you can see it. As tech-savvy as kids are these days, he or she would probably know exactly what to do!

What a fun use of Skype!

Perhaps mom could focus the camera on the page he/she is reading. Thus, you can tell what the next word should be and help if it is needed. Good luck.
