cast iron vs. acrylic vs. "solid-surface" tubs
Comments (5)I just posted that last message before I did a search on this forum for acrylic vs. cast iron and found some very good discussions about it. But would still appreciate any insight into the weight of the cast iron for a second floor bathroom of a 30 year old home and how to get it up the stairs!...See MoreTub Help - freestanding tub cast iron soaker or acrylic with hydro?
Comments (3)I had an acrylic pedestal tub in my last home, it was beautiful but it did not retain heat as long as I would like. Also it had to be reinstalled and I think they put some type of foam/cement in the base and then it did not budge at all. I also need to make a decision on a tub in the next two weeks and I will likely go with a pedestal acrastone tub ( American Bath Factory Nob Hill) . My first choice would be a victoria albert elwick if I had the space, I need 60" and I can not find a pedestal style I like in a 60" length with this company. Please post what you decide to go with....See MoreKohler tub cast iron showing through
Comments (5)Thank you. I really feel that a bad batch was made with thin porcelain. I think the cast iron is showing through the porcelain coating. I plan on contacting Kohler!...See MoreSpray Kohler Cast Iron Tub White? Suggestions?
Comments (5)Thank you so much for your comments. While I was at the tile shop today, the sales person told me that over the years she’s worked with many people who wish they would’ve just replaced the tub when they had a chance. I think that is important with a completely gutted bathroom. I actually called Kohler today too. They were very helpful. They have some Kohler approved “refinishing“ companies for cast-iron tubs. However, there were none near me. I asked about the spray type of refinishing and she said they don’t recommend it. She told me to Google refinishing cast-iron tubs and all that came up was Miracle Method and the other companies. I might call again tomorrow just out of curiosity to find out who their approved companies are, even though there is not one near me in Minneapolis, just to find out what kind of company they are. I did address one other issue that I had read about and that is that the new cast-iron tubs have a slight wave to them as in they are not completely flat. The sides look like a slight ripple like finish. She said some tubs are worse than others. She told me the reason for that is over the years they have changed what goes into the cast-iron tubs. That’s when she said if I really wanted to keep the one I have to find someone to refinish it. She wasn’t specific about what used to be in it versus what is in it now but I thought that was interesting too. All of this to say, I’m just gonna buy a new tub. I’d rather save the money but as the old saying goes I don’t wanna be penny wise pound foolish. I’m going to go with a Kohler bellwether. I like that it is low to the ground but has clean lines. Easy to step over but still a bath if you need it. And it’s a beloved cast iron tub!...See MoreKirsten Burmester
