You're talking about the piece that covers the wiring/junction box in the ceiling, right? Since you're using a white medallion, after the medallion goes up, I would have someone holdit up there w/ the white cover first and see how it looks in place. If you don't like the look, then paint it. However, if you're talking about a cathedral ceiling or a really heavy fan, you could try it out at ground level :). I'm not a decorator, buy my first instinct is paint it ORB. Trying to imagine it white in my mind, it would look odd to me if it were white, kinda like the fan would be floating or something.

We were considering putting in a ceiling fan in our family room during our remodel (and even wired for it), but DH felt it would make the ceiling look too busy since it's only 8'. Anyway, in the process though I was working with a lighting designer and I must say there are some lovely fans out there that do make a decorator statement. If I had the height, I would've put one in hands down. You can custom select blades from any of a number of wood finishes plus several different finishes to coordinate with other hardware. Depending on your climate, a decorative fan can be a real asset for resale. Personally, I think the white ones look cheap and cheesy--like what you find in an apartment rental. Frankly, all of our decor and color schemes become dated--no matter what we choose. It's the industry that needs to have people keep buying new stuff--even though the old stuff is perfectly good. Suru11, they make them bigger too, but most of them are pretty dreadful. This one grew on me...didn't like it at first, but it's one of the better looking ones out there and it fit my theme. The answer to this one is quite subjective, so everyone will have their own opinion. Blending with the ceiling is less risky and will make the fan less obtrusive in the room. Blending with the floor may make more of a design statement. But if you are really creative with your design and willing to take a little more risk to make a statement, you might decide that the fan does not need to match the ceiling or the floor, but blend in with the room decor.
