Rose newbie looking for advice on what rose to plant
Comments (3)I saw a stunning red rose in front of a town home near the Met. It fit the tight space very well. I think that it is Red Cascade, but am not sure. Brooklyn Botanic Garden has several spetacular, fully-grown Dublin Bay climbers, but that rose might be too big for you. I grow both Blaze Improved and Don Juan. BI's bloom last longer, but the blooms are not particulary pretty and resmeble double knockouts in color and shape. DJ has big, silky and very fragrant blooms. However, DJ gets a lot more blackspot than BI here in my garden. DJ has a upright growth habit, while Blaze will through out canes in all directions, which might annoys the neighbor. My guess is that you might want to avoid BI. BI is a work horse in terms of giving out blooms, while DJ is stingierw with repeats. My plants are very young (2-year old), so maybe someone around area know from first hand experience how they do once they are mature. BTW, if you do like BI, get Blaze Improved, not Blaze as BI has better repeat, or so I heard....See MoreWhat Rose did you win with at the rose show this year?
Comments (5)I did one show in the spring (Gainsville, Fl) and got Sunstruck as HT princes and Uncle Joe on the court. Lady of the Dawn won best florabunda spray. Arcanum won mini King. One show late this fall (St. Pete., Fl) and won mini-flora queen with Class of "73" and mini-flora king with Louisville Lady. Not to bad out of a garden I'm almost totally rebuilding....See MoreRose Fever - what rose grows/blooms in a few hours sun?
Comments (10)Most roses have more blooms and healthier foliage with lots of sun, but some like the Knockout family of roses and 'antique' roses will do well with less than optimum conditions. One of the prettiest plantings I ever saw was a bed of combined red, pink and blush Knockout roses at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. I'll look for a picture. A rose I'm growing now is doing well with not much sun is Julia Child. It's yellow, stays small and is fragrant. It got pretty straggly looking during those rainy weeks, but has put on healthy new foliage and is blooming. My absolute favorite rose for beauty, health, fragrance, large size of bloom and heat resistance is September Morn. Comments (36)Well, it's hard to say for sure, but after looking at additional pictures, I stick with my earlier guess that it's America. I cherry-picked these 2 photos from Heirloom's website, but I think they're representative. Compare them to the photos in the original post - looks like a match to me. I think it's very nice, though I have resisted buying one. Maybe it's that the color is a bit unique, and I am not sure what to plant near it. Or maybe it's that I don't get the "America" connection. I know it was introduced for the bicentennial, but I don't know much more than that. Does anyone have additional information about how it was named?...See MoreMario Gallegos
