Soffit light and spacing

Most new homes I see here seem to have soffit lights instead of wall mounted lights/sconces. They are typically over-excessive in where it makes the who house light up and have goofy patterns or shadows. On a double stall garage, assuming it's a single story home, is it better to have 3 lights with one on each outside corner of the doors and one in the exact center of the two doors meaning the light is never directly ABOVE the garage doors....or better to just do two lights centered above the doors? These will be standard 4 or 6" recessed lights into the soffit and not something like tiny low voltage lights. Lumen options are from 600 to 1k so I believe any combination of lights will be enough lighting but not too sure on the best looking layout.
