Center the rug with the fireplace. Take the bookcase out of the left corner of the room and put that in the space between the kitchen and FR, where the console table now sits. Move the sectional down toward the fireplace, (after centering the rug), add an end table to the outside of the chaise part of the sectional. Someone sitting there wonâÂÂt want to move to get a drink off the coffee table. Be sure there is a lamp there as well, to light that corner of the room. Move the armoire to angle in the corner where the sectional was sitting originally. Use it for storage, perhaps add shelving or even a pull-out shelf for a computer center which can be closed up and put away. The piece is very nice, and gives good height to balance the fireplace and high ceilings. For now, try the console on the wall to the right of the fireplace, and place the new flatscreen on that. Later you may prefer a more substanial cabinet, which can hide other components and store DVDs, etc. If you do that, then try the console table behind the part of the sectional that has its back to the kitchen. Add a comfy upholstered chair in the corner, a bit closer to the fireplace, where the armoire was, along with another small side table and lamp.

It looks like moving the couch to the window wall will block the traffic from the bedrooms. If there is room, I would try the couch forward of the window wall and perpendicular to the wall with the bookcase so that it acts as one side of a "hall" from the bedrooms to the kitchen. Possibly use the buffet piece, or bookcase if it's low, behind the sofa. Place the chair in a right angle to one side of the sofa. Another arrangement would be to place the couch on the wall shared with your bedroom, TV and storage on the long wall, chairs across from couch. Computer to the left of the window before kitchen entrance. This will give you breathing room between lounge area and dining area. I'd put the tv on the buffet from the dining area until the right piece came along. Something like this arrangement is what you would see when walking down the entry hall. The little things by the bufffet can go. Put the tv on a long, low-ish piece of furniture that can hold equipment, movies, etc. Eventually, turning that long wall from the entry into a storage/media center will help reduce that cluttered feeling. You can consider a set or collect pieces that play well with each other. Get a smaller, but useful dining table. One that expands would be ideal so that you have options if you need length.

I'm sorry, but I don't care for the color of the LR chairs; they somehow detract from the elegance of your living room. I would have them in a neutral color that will go with the couch, but perhaps with a more textured material. I would also choose a neutral rug, and I really like the one with the light gray lozenge shapes surrounded by a darker gray color, which has a lot of texture and presence. If the chairs had been a softer blue I think they would have worked, something like the dining chairs above in the picture with the brick wall. I would think very carefully about what colors you really love and introduce them slowly into that room. Perhaps lemon yellow or lime green pillows would be a good place to start. Frankly I like the modern, pristine look of the fireplace as it is now, although I think the TV may be too high for comfortable viewing. My style is very opposite to yours, a sort of English Country with lofts of color and paintings and Chinese porcelain, but I admire the purity of the look that you're starting with, and too much embellishment might just ruin that. I would keep any architectural elements very simple. I wouldn't choose a round coffee table because you have such a large couch, and frankly I like all the rectangular lines in this room. Please make sure that you buy a large enough rug for the living area. For the art I would choose large abstracts, if you like that kind of thing, with some warm colors in them like terracotta, yellow and greens so play off the cool tones of the furniture. Okay, since this is your home, you're free to do whatever makes you happy and feels right to you.

I can't speak regarding exact sizes or dimensions...the size of things you should or should not get but.... I can give some thoughts on overall layout and placement of furniture. First, I'm assuming from the photo that the kitchen is attached to living area? I seem to see kitchen sink in foreground of photo? Either way, for a long narrow room and where you want a couch/seating, I personally think it's important to try and 'soften' the room...because it's long and narrow, whatever you put in the room could add to that boxy or straight/hard feeling. When I say 'soften' I mean... I like furniture at slight angles...or not perfectly straight. I never press a couch directly against the wall. It feels stiff and feels like lack of air flow ('chi'). I would pull couch at least 2" from wall. Also, instead of one long (stiff/straight-looking) couch, how about a loveseat, and then 1-2 chairs on either side of the loveseat or couch, turned at a slight inward angle ...so the loveseat and the two chairs almost create a very soft C-shape? I'm also a fan of round side tables vs square ones, again, to help 'soften' hard lines. Put a round side table between the loveseat and one of the side chairs. Another option is to add a pedestal light with a globe lampshade, at either end of the couch. A tree plant in one of the corners of the living area (say one of the corners by the entry door) creates a focal point, adds 'life' to the room and vertical interest.
