Front Door Style and Color?

I recently switched from a black roof to these architectural Shakewood shingles. I need a new entry door and am stuck on a door style and color. I'm not married to the black shutters, although I'd like to keep them. I was thinking of a glass insert in the door, but am stuck on style because of the oval window above the door. I think that a slate colored door might be nice, but could use some help!

I think slate would look pretty good, but I'd consider going a little darker because of the black shutters. Here are a couple styles of doors that I like and think would look nice on your home (I'm not a fan of half or full light kits on doors, mainly for security reasons):

Or simply install an unfinished Fiber Glass door and you can change the color as much as you like until you find the right look, these would be a solid solution if you plan to hang and finish the door yourself.

Hello Waynette,

Congratulations on your newly renovated roof, the Shakewood shingles look very beautiful. Regarding your questions, I agree on adding a splash of color to the facade to bright up the entrance, like a bold red. You could incorporate the glass insert in the door design, like in the photos below, it won't compete with the oval top window.

When it comes to your plantings, I'd tour some local gardens. If you are near a major city, a botanical garden, or if nothing else available that fits within your time constraints, you'll often find better nurseries have display gardens. If there is a landscape architect in your area, you might even find paying for an hour or two of his/her time for a few suggestions if not an actual plan is worth your investment. You can do the work yourself after getting sound, studied ideas. A tree, especially something as potentially large and long lived as an oak in the front is a lifetime commitment, your life and likely a few of the next generations. You want to be sure you will appreciate its shade, leaf litter, roots in the lawn. I'm not wild about the idea of much besides simple evergreens close to the house, at some point that house will need maintenance and you don't want plantings in the way and to stress over. The biggest mistake I made with the gardens in my first home was perennial beds bordering the house - there is no way a contractor doing assigned work can adequately protect them. As for hydrangeas, I love them but not immediately at the front door for their bare deciduous stems to be front and center all winter, only full and lush in Spring and Summer. Homework, research for your specific climate, it will pay off in the long term...

So for East facing, you can use green or brown colors. If you plan on keeping the rest of your house colors as is, then I would change your door to a brown color. It will help give your house a "pop" of color, update it to modern, but also keep the charm of your green and creme color scheme. Agreeable Gray by sherwin williams is actually the color I would suggest! I like Pure white for the trim. For the rest of this, I am going to make a list of suggestions. tile: Baja Tecate (12x24) with sahara beige grout (matches agreeable gray wonderfully) carpet: ride it out -whisper (shaw floors) stain- weathered wood. It's a gray stain. I would do a heavy stain on shaker style cabinets. (I know you're wanting white, but this is just for thought). perhaps bathroom cabinets? cabinetry hardware: Remington with barpull hardware (something like Hickory Hardware Bar Pull in stainless steel finish) They're very clean looking, and I love having actual handles instead of the little knobs on cabinets. countertops (kitchen): viatera quarts- cirrus backsplash: Nove Hex- Steel Mix with frost grout kitchen sink: siligranite- single bowl -anthracite black (I LOVE the single bowl sinks) bathroom vanity tops and showers: gray swirl (I don't have more information on this at the moment, but I can post pictures of what I am referring to) for lighting, door knobs, faucets, etc: keep things brushed nickel and chrome

I remember Kelly Hoppen commenting on the striking effect of a black door ... and haven't looked black. It's sophisticated, stunning and makes an impactful first impression. The bonus ... those black shutters will have new life.

When you paint the front door, you might consider painting the garage door the same color. Looks as if you have a nice, standard colonial entry door. Do you want to add a window for light?

First, I'd like to say that I am new to Houzz, and I am lovin' this place. Second, I like to thank you all for your prompt responses.

Atelier Armbruster I love the examples that you posted and had actually priced the second door, as I like the six panel door and thought those two glass inserts was a step up. I question myself on that though, as I have seen solid 6 panel doors dressed up nicely (paint, knocker, handle) that look beautiful.

Elements by K SorbeI would LOVE a black door and I think it would look amazing on my house, but I live in the NE where a storm door is a must! They don't recommend dark colored doors, if behind storm doors and my door faces East and gets really hot, until late afternoon.

Lynne Mysliwiec I like the standard 6 panel door, when they are dressed up nicely (paint, door knocker, handle). I really don't need more light in that area, as I already have the oval window above the door. I just started remodeling after 25 years and thought that a door with glass inserts would not only add to my curb appeal, but would make the interior look a lot less boring! Of course, this added interest cost $$$!
