Your sofa is approx. 8.5 feet long, but that is the only measurement we have. Based on that, I'd say and 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 foot rug. Use a small rug to create the 'foyer look' you want by the door. You could also use a runner there and have it extend under the buffet, but we need room dimensions.

Felix, this is one of those situations where each of your two options has pluses and minuses. Aesthetically, the larger rug looks better. Practically, the smaller rug works better because of the front door. Here is a third option:

I think what you have will look just fine. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken and this is a perfect example of that. Since you have a chaise lounge at the foyer end, the rug will look fine as you drew it in the gray outline.

Porter is correct, rugs should be to the floor what a tabelcloth is to a table, not a centrepiece, as is so often done.

You have a good proportion in that sketch. I would go with either of them, and have it meet the tv console. Not knowing the exact dimensions, I can't tell whether the rug to the blue area would look odd in relation to the room door, but that is something you should consider too

I don’t think you need a rug. I would buy a great upholstered round ottoman for the sectional…you get your color and warmth from it.
