Crown molding or, at this stage, is it too late?

Anyone has stained cabinets with paint grade crown molding? Pics?
Comments (2)I suppose it could work, but I think most people try to make the fascia diappear into either the cabinetry or the ceiling. If they want it to extend the ceiling line they paint it ceiling color and the heavier crown is usually separating the cabinets from the fascia. If they want to extend the eye up, the cabinet color goes up to the ceiling. In what you are describing it sounds like you are trying to make the fascia of visual interest, not to disappear. I think it would be difficult to pull off well and in addition to ceiling color, I think it also depends on widths of the individual components. here is a picture that emphasis the fascia with molding but I think it works in part because of its monochromatic nature. (X-post)
Comments (12)Well, you could move the cased door opening into the room (toward the viewer in the first picture) so it is flush with the sloped wall. That would eliminate the flat section of ceiling (with the recessed light) and would give you two flat walls intersecting. But that would be a costly change at this point (I would think) and you'd still be dealing with a fairly contemporary room that you're trying to "traditionalize" with crown molding. Your arched opening doesn't have much room for molding (is there 5-1/4" there?), and I don't know that a vaulted ceiling with a skylight easily lends itself to crown moldings. What if you were to flip the idea on its head and go with some sort of wainscoting? You'd eliminate the ceiling problem, but would still have a more traditional treatment for the room....See MoreNew build with kitchen cabinet too large for door cove crown molding
Comments (41)I am so grateful for this feedback I have received today. And thank you again PPF and Bryan911 for all the helpful details. I am going to see about a new upper cabinet. We’ve put too much into this project to let two upper cabinets good us up :) I had a lot of people including a designer I hired for a short time out eyes on this, and we still missed it. Just goes to show you how difficult it can be to build a house and get all the details to work out as hoped. PPF — the reason we broke up the expanse of the pantry door with shaker panels was since we wanted it to look integrates with the cabinetry and to break up the tall doors since we have 10’ ceilings. I do agree also about hinges that can be hidden. It also annoys me that they are such a bright gold when my lights and cabinet hardware will be more of an aged, satin brass. Is it easy to switch out hinges and not mess up the doors?...See MoreCeiling Built too low for crown molding. Help!
Comments (12)Thanks—I remembered the term after I posted. It’s not the master, but I’m less worried about the difference than the lower ceiling and lack of crown molding making the room less finished. Do you think the picture rail will lower the ceiling? I also got a suggestion of beams (which we like) or a coffered ceiling (which we generally don’t), but have the same concern about looking lower. But I’m starting to think that’s not a real problem—many rooms with beams are 8’ or below. Thoughts?...See MoreRyan Olivieri, Inc.
