Hello, Harvey.
Comments (73)Just saw a very sad occurrence of six people killed in a van, and I hope you'll all be very careful when getting around, if you even can. I can't even imagine the anxiety and depression that so many must be feeling, especially as there seems to be no end in sight for this megastorm. I'm afraid there is no way this could have been prevented since so much of the cause involves global warming, and in the end we're helpless against these events, even though we have caused them. We in the U.S. have been one of the worst contributors to pollution that causes global warming, but to see all this suffering is awful, and it is the politicians I blame, not these people and their children and animals who are going through this nightmare. I just read in disbelief that some House politicians have voted to cut almost a million dollars in the new budget from disaster relief to help pay for the Wall!!! I am in total shock. Edited: boncrow, we posted at the same time and saw your heartbreaking message after I submitted mine. There are no words to tell you how sorry I am, nothing that will do justice to what you and so many others are going through, but I write this with tears in my eyes. All we can do is give whatever we can to help in the relief effort, and to keep you all in our hearts. May you stay safe....See MoreAny GWers in the path of Harvey? Please take care!
Comments (65)If there are folks here who have not visited the Kitchen Table, I suggest they go over there and read some of the threads, especially the one called "Harvey", which is telling ongoing stories of what people are going through in detail, like Lucille (wishing you safety and good health, Lucille, and hoping that your losses are not too drastic) and Raven, about whom there is a lot of detail, beginning when she wasn't even sure that they'd have to evacuate, and Marilyn, who is on a bayou and who had to swim her horses out and lost some of the other animals she has rehabbed and adopted. Raven, Lucille, Marilyn, and others are writing some very sad things; you can read many personal accounts....See MoreAppliance Help needed after Hurricane Harvey flood
Comments (2)Sorry you are dealing with this. I would go over to Factory Builders, Best Buy's Pacific appliances, Sara and others and check out for floor models, scratch and dents, etc. Check out AJMadison and call and ask them for a package discount. Place your choices in the cart and then give them a call to see what they can do. We did that with the appliances for my sister's house. The discount they can give varies by appliance, but we wound up with about 10% off the total. Actually, AJMadison is a great place to shop by category and size to compare options -- and to know whether a local deal is a deal. Is the Asko a DW? Not familiar with an Asko fridge. We got a good buy on a mid-high level Bosch with the third rack. Most of the features of the top of the line but not quite and about half the price. You can find that to be true with DWs. The 48" range and 42" fridge are going to be tough to find huge savings on unless you find a demo or used one that works. Is there any flexibility in the layout? Can you use a 36" fridge and leave a space or put a freestanding cabinet or bookcase until you can change it out later? Or make the change permanent? Same possibility with the range. I don't know why your insurance won't pay to replace what you had, but I would also look at that for the future. If your limits weren't enough or you weren't getting replacement value, you might want to change your future coverage. None of us saw this until it was upon us kind of thing coming -- take what we have learned and make it better. And then hope you never have to use it. I know it isn't enough, but I do wish you the best and hope you can put things back together and wish you lots of patience on the way there....See MoreHarvey remodel. Comments (16)We finally found a place to rent that has 3 bedrooms and isn't insanely expensive, Yay! I've been playing with the ideas off and on while buying new cars, visiting potential rentals, and working on the house. I talked with the family about converting our 4th bedroom to expand bath and move laundry. My kids were aghast! Where were guests going to sleep? Where were we going to put the desk top (they watch movies on it occasionally, too)? Middle kid thought that it was going to be his room when ready. So, we've decided to keep laundry in the original place. I'm still stealing some of the 4th BR for our MBA, though. The island plan looks fantastic but I kept wanting more storage options once the laundry room had to stay. Also, there is significant cost savings by not digging out concrete for plumbing and installing a beam for the load-bearing wall. Some ideas I had: 1) Widen the existing 32" doorways from garage and into kitchen to 36". Those doors are a huge pain when moving large items through, like the washer/dryer/fridge etc. I can use a barn door or pocket for the kitchen entrance. This will shorten the pantry a bit (measurements are existing on drawing are existing). 2) 1-2 d/w in clean up zone. Bring the existing pass through to counter level so kids can help put dishes away on DR/FR side. Maybe have space for cookbooks under that counter, as well. 3) 30" deep counters 4) Love to keep Mamagoose's 3 panel doors to the patio. With the wall shortened over there, it will bring a lot of light into the house and northern light isn't so bad in the South. I'm not sure what to do with the cabinets between the fridge and sink. I'd like to plan for the future and have some kind of narrow pullout to the left of my 32" all fridge that can be removed if going bigger. The wall on that side can be shortened for french door swing and the pantry remain as sized. Maybe a narrow pantry using cabinetry and store packages of paper towels, grocery bags, etc, above the appliances in the laundry...or in the garage....See Morejerzeegirl (FL zone 9B)
