MiracleGro Potting Mix versus SuperSoil Potting Soil ???
Comments (9)Do you have an easy recipe of making your own mix for a gardening-beginner? Yes. I would recommend using what is known around here as 'Al's 5-1-1 mix' for annuals and perennials grown for just a year or two before being repotted. For plants that will stay in the same container/mix for more than 2 years I would recommend what is known around here as 'Al's Gritty mix'. The 5:1:1 mix is 5 parts pine bark (very small pieces), 1 part perlite and 1 part peat. The gritty mix is 1 part pine bark fines, 1 part Turface MVP and 1 part grower grit (#2 sized). For more information on this I will refer you to this thread. Don't get too hung up on specific ingredients and percentages. The principle is using ingredients that will be of a large enough size (above 1/16th inch) for as long as the plant will be in the mix. This provides superior aeration. The higher the percentage of organic matter such as peat or bark, the faster the mix breaks down and aeration suffers. The bark breaks down much slower than peat though. Anyway, read the thread and you will learn a lot. If you can't find suitable ingredients to make your own mix in time to get the season started then just get the regular MG potting mix and take until next year to learn more and locate sources for ingredients you want....See MoreIs Miracle Grow potting soil safe for planting milkweed
Comments (4)I have used MiracleGro fertilizer on our blueberry shrubs, and this seems to work well. The Japanese beetles that occasionally visit the shrubs and chew up the leaves don't seem to mind. However, MiracleGro fertilizer does not contain any toxic herbicide or pesticide, according to the label. It is a mixture of various mineral salts that dissolve easily in water, and provide essential elements to the plants. I can't say for sure what is in their potting soil. Have you read the label?...See MoreScott's Miracle Grow Potting Soil OK for Fig Tree?
Comments (8)The urea nitrate is chemically the same in manure verses chemical fertilizer, either way, it is the same. One could say that you could also get tuberculosis, and anthrax which is endemic in most dirt. There is no exposure, the slow release pellets are not eaten. I implore you to research this more and trust but verify all information given here or anywhere else.. Also, unless you also eat all organic fruit and veggies you are still guarding the front door while leaving the back open if you know what I mean. Comments (17)"Thanks BR. I see it's also got chelated iron in it, looks like a good starter product, when do you start backing off on the phosphate, or do you?" I don't. They stay wicked in that solution until they get moved outside to harden off. I do not use that product at all once the plants are outside and in the ground. Once outside I don't as a rule fertilize veggies once they are outside...sometimes a shot of 8-8-8 granular but my ground is very rich due to the rabbit manure and seldom have a need. But while say peppers are on the green light they will sometimes initiate flower buds while inside.I pick them off but seems a good sign....See MorePatti Chicago Zone 5b/6a
