'What Not to Wear'---anybody watchin' this?
Comments (26)Oh, heck - do whatever you want. Are you retired? When I retire from work I will be changing my wardrobe to more reflect my personality, without having to worry about dressing for the office any longer. Yeehaw! Seriously though, I don't think capris are too young, and I don't think any color is a no-no at 70. It's the time when you can let loose and wear colorful clothes and lots of "bling". If you go to senior-heavy areas in Florida, Palm Springs, the gals dress loudly and proudly and wear the blingiest bling you can imagine. I think it looks like a lot of fun....See MoreTips for dressing less than "perfect" bodies
Comments (25)kwsl, I agree that they are often guilty of not doing a very good job with larger women (or should we say average women?) And I also think that often times they treat all larger women as though they have the same body types. What a mistake. Proportion is so important, no matter what you weigh. At 115 or 185, a woman will still have best features, and things she wants to de-emphasize. And while "ideal weight" women can look good in a wide variety of styles, I believe there are styles and patterns, etc. that are the most flattering, and that this is true of them even if they gain a substantial amount of weight. I am close to my ideal weight, but even when I was very young and in great shape my torso length was short, my shoulders were narrow (as was my waist), and my thighs were larger than proportional to the rest of me. Needless to say that leggings and boxy tops were not a good look at any point in time for me. And now with a couple of extra pounds, I look best in boot cut jeans, darker tops that fit close to the body and go in at the waist, and in nothing that shows any thigh....See MoreDuvet cover, clothes steamer and Stitch Fix #2
Comments (13)Eld, maybe your niece uses Rent the Runway. I hear of people who have to go to formal events who rent a dress to wear. It makes perfect sense since these are often expensive items that you will only wear once or twice. the Stitch Fix quality is varied. Everything in my first box was very nice although one item didn’t fit and another was something I knew I would not wear. I love the cashmere sweater and it’s been very useful. The second box was much more TJ Maxx quality— cheaply made but also overpriced. I may give them one more chance in the spring and give more detail. My last trip to the mall was a nightmare. I dragged myself all over and finally found one pair of black pants. I got in line to pay. There were two people ahead of me. While I was waiting, another woman came up to the counter on the other side rather than getting in line. The salesperson insisted she had been there first. I was so tired and irritated I just shoved the pants at her and said she could keep the damn things — well maybe not quite that rude. So if I can get nice clothes delivered to the door, I am all for it. Now we are in the midst of freezing weather and snow but I have to get those clothes back in the mail within three days. At least they send a postage paid envelope....See MoreAnnie and others experienced in sewing
Comments (65)I do think you would likely be able to narrow the wrap pieces of the bodice on your ordered dress. That would be much easier than restyling the neckline and having to rework the entire bodice to get there. It kind of looks like they have a tiny, small-busted model with a dress that is maybe a size too large pulled and clipped around her, or it could be a mock-up, so it will be interesting to see how it fits you. The Lilly wrap dress could be hemmed. If the bodice is long, it's possible the bodice and skirt could be taken apart and each shortened from the waist - with or without also having to do the sweeping hem. That probably means reworking a zipper too, but still simpler that trying to change the neckline of a wrapped bodice. You say it will be hot even though it will be spring. Synthetics like chiffon, plus a lining, may not be very comfortable if that is the case. Linen or a linen cotton blend, cotton gauze or double gauze would seem to be the coolest options. Maybe an embroidered cotton. I bought myself a toy -- and embroidery machine, and the upgrade that was just announced has some large embroidery panels -- would be fun to do something like that on a dress....See More- 6 years ago
