Soups, Sews and Other Comfort Foods
Comments (42)LOL...I didn't notice this thread started last year. We've had 'spring', too. Snow in November and then rain and now ice, but it's cold and windy now, and we're in for several days of snow. We've been on a soup binge (damp, cold, dark weather and I'm trying to clean out my freezers). Last week I POOFed the Christmas ham bone and broth and made black and white bean soup, and today I made turkey (meat and broth left from TDay) and noodles for our staff mtg. We had Sticky Chicken the other night. The leftover meat and broth from the carcass are in the fridge and later in the week I'll pull out some frozen creamed corn for this chowder. The seasoning on the chicken really makes it, but I've used plain roasted chicken and Penzey's Northwoods Fire seasoning. * Exported from MasterCook * Cheesy Sticky Chicken Chowder Recipe By :Katie, April, 2001 Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Soups Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1 Sticky Chicken carcass 3 potatoes 1 small onion 2 stalks celery 2 cups creamed corn 1 can diced green chiles (at least) 1 8 oz. brick cream cheese 1/2 - 3/4 cup cream -- or evaporated milk Pick meat off chicken and dice. Cover carcass with water and simmer. Strain and cool broth. Skim off fat. Cook potatoes, onion, and celery in broth until tender. Add diced chicken, corn and chiles. Heat through and stir in cheese and cream. Makes about 1 1/2 qt. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - And this one is next, since I have a couple of sweet potatoes that need to be used. Found this on pinterest: African Sweet Potato Soup with Peanut Butter and Black Beans Serves 4-5, adapted from Gluten-Free Goddess 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp Thai red curry paste 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 medium red onion, peeled and diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 medium sweet potato, peeled and diced 1 large yellow bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 jalapeno, seeded and diced very finely 1/2 lb dried black beans, soaked overnight and cooked until tender 1 quart veggie broth 1/2 cup all-natural peanut butter (or sunbutter for those allergic!) 1/2 cup boiling water 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro 1 lime 3 tsp brown sugar salt and black pepper, to taste 1. Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot. Add the curry paste and cinnamon. Stir for a minute so that the olive oil gets infused with spice. Add the onion, garlic, sweet potato, bell pepper, and jalapeno. Stir and cook the veggies for 5-7 minutes, until softened. 2. Add the beans and broth. Melt the peanut butter by mixing it with 1/2 cup boiling water. Add that to the mix. Add the red pepper flakes and cilantro. 3. Bring the soup to a boil, then cover and simmer. Cook until veggies are tender, about 25 minutes. 4. Stir in the lime juice and brown sugar. Season with salt and black pepper. Comments (9)Meg, I have an Amazing Box with 4 slots which sounds like the same type of thing you are looking at. The way it works is - you read a design from your computer into the box software, then write it to the card in the format you need. Most digitizers offer the designs in many formats, so you would only download the format you use (for example, my Brother machine uses PES format). You only need the 4 slot box if you are going to use/purchase cards in other formats, like if you wanted to buy Brother cards and write them onto your Viking card. I have never in 6 years used any of the other slots in my box. There are other boxes out there (I think Ultimate Box is one) that only read/write in one format, so they cost less. There is also a program called Embird which is very reasonably priced that you can use to convert designs to your format, as well as for resizing, combining and editing designs. Someone at the store you are buying the newer machine from should be able to explain all of it to you - what format it uses, etc. The cards that came with my Brother machine and my Amazing Box hold quite a few designs each, though the box software only handles up to 6 designs at a time. Comments (7)I saw your studio today, very nice. That is so wonderful that you use the machines and other things you collect...it's like why would you restore a car and then not drive it. I went through some new quilt magazines today...just thought I'd tell you I didn't find anything even close to what you design. It seems most patterns now are mostly squares and rectangles...I'm not knocking them because I use them to make up a quick quilt but there are those of us that are looking for new challenging and enlightening patterns. I think you should copyright your patterns and sell them. They are just yummy!! Jean...See Morelove2sew.......How's Annie?
Comments (1)Oh, Annie is just great. I have her sitting on a table in my living room so I can pop in and look at her every day. I bought new needles and installed correctly, oiled and greased her so she sews a perfect stitch and hums along. I have not had a chance to sew actual squares and strips together because I don't have anything ready at the momment. I'm looking forward to a relaxing day sewing on Annie on the patio. I will have someone take a picture then. In the meantime I have some other (non quilting) projects to get done. Jean...See Moreeld6161
