Is there a way I can help an old white pine that lost half its roots?

At home they are installing a pipeline that luckily only goes across a small portion of our property. Anyway, there's an old white pine, about 60 years old, that's on the easement. They were originally supposed to cut it down, but the clearing company missed it, so they ended up grading right up to the tree, taking about 40% of the roots. The other 60% or so are undisturbed, but this is a major root loss. At a college I worked at, we watered a tree a couple times a week in a simular scenario, but I'm not sure whether the tree ended up making it or not. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do for this one?
