Comments (39)Well its like this, I hybridize daylilys, but have a very small yard, but I have this friend of about 30 years that bought a house "right around the corner". He has 3 or 4 acres, well I got him interested in Daylilys, and soon I had a couple of beds over there in the front yard which is as big as my back yard. Well we used up all that space between my plants, and his plants and a bunch of Irises, so we went out back and put in a couple more beds. All was well for quite awhile, but my friend starts work early so I would go over there every morning after I pollinated here and continue my work there. He would often leave me a list of crosses he would like done and I would do them for him. We had a realy nice arrangement until his neighbors moved. The old neighbors used to just shake their heads at us plant nuts and not pay us much attnetion. Well a nice young couple purchased the home, and weren't really used to the way things are. Well I had been going over there for about a week armed with pollen, string tags, pen, pencil, clipboard and pollen but no one noticed me. Well one day about 11:00 I went over, and pollinated some flowers in the front yard, and had just moved to the back yard. Now it was about 85 degrees, I was wearing cut off jeans, and a pocket t shirt, no shoes, I have pollen all over me and I'm sweating to beat the band when I hear, "put your hands up, and lay down on the ground". Well I was more than surprised, but I managed to comply. The next thing I knew I was cuffed, searched, and asked just exactly what and the hell I was doing. Now the city I live in is small, and I know 75% of the police force by name, but not these two. I had left my wallet at home, so I had no ID. It took me almost 15 minutes to explain what I was doing while I was answering their questions along the way, fortuntely a Sargent showed up. I was instantly relieved, he took one look at me and told them to take the cuffs off, laughing the whole time. After the other two settled down he looks at me and says, "OK John I know this is going to be good what is going on", he never stopped laughing..... I met the new neighbors that evening....See MoreRhizo_1, What are you and the Sprites doing for Christmas?
Comments (18)Make no mistake....we are the lucky ones in all of this. These two little girls have jumped into our lives fearlessly, assuming that we were going to love them. They have not had an easy early childhood and how they turned out to be so funny, irrepressibly joyous, and loving is a miracle to me. We are grateful that our dear neighbor, their g'pa, doesn't hoard them all to himself, but lets us be an extended family of sorts. He made it official several months ago when he bought us our own booster seat for little sprite! :-) I still get teary when I think about that. The sprites are 6 and nearly 8....See MoreCalling Rhizo.......
Comments (18)How very sweet of you to ask about my sprites and my husband! Never fear, all is well. Satine remembers correctly and I appreciate her mentioning the fact that I felt like I had overshared and maybe invaded some privacy. Please know that the girls are busy and happy and very much in our lives. For some reason, Little Sprite has entered a stage where she may change her clothes four or five times a day over the weekend, including things in her hair, different shoes and socks, etc. What's that all about? Oh my, you should have seen what she slipped into her backpack to decorate herself for school picture day! I may need to take her to some thrift stores to see if we can find some extra cool accoutrements. The older sprite is usually a blur of streaming hair as she zooms by on her bike or skates or scooter or sneakers. I've seen her jump rope past our house, down the street and around the corner! She has learned how to swim, mastered her fear of drowning just in time for the pool season. She is still very much into the cooking shows and likes preparing things for her friends and family. My own repertoire has broadened because of her desire to make things that she has seen Bobby (Flay) or Giada whip out! Robert's recovery from his hip replacement went very well for the most part. He followed the orders of his surgeon and therapists and was very happy with his progress. He's been able to do things outside that he's neglected for a couple of years; it's great to see him so active again. Thanks for caring....I'll pop in with sprite stories from time to time, I promise. Today is their last day of school!...See MoreDid You Tell Your Children Stories About Your Life?
Comments (30)As a southerner we have a history of telling stories and it was very much a part of my upbringing though trying to fit all those tales into some sort of coherent history is another matter. We practiced our own history with my mother starting "remember whens" My mother was a spoiled only child and most of her stories were about how special she was to her doting father. My father did not talk much about his childhood though I know they moved frequently as my grandfather was a mason and builder. I spent a good deal of time with my mothers step-mother-my Grannie- and learned as much about her life as I could. She was a child of the depression-something that for her on a prosperous farm in the south was just something they heard about happening elsewhere. Grow your own food and make your own clothes and you only need money for taxes and coffee and salt. I loved hearing about her life. she was one of a big family of girls and they had to work like boys. Their father did not want them to leave home so for each of them it was an adventure to leave. I don't have children and have always lived all the way across the country from my kin so I have had no one to pass on what I know nor about my own life but there you are. I love social history and yet historians will use the lives of the rich and famous thinking they are telling you how people lived in the past-the one tenth of the one percent....See More- 9 years ago
