Help! Hoya emergency! How to know and stop a plant from dying...

Got your attention right? :D

It's not as extreme as all that, I just didn't know what/how to title this thread.

Back story, I finally found a Hoya retusa after searching and it promptly dropped dead on me less than a week later. All I can assume is that it was over watered before I bought it (and it's Winter, so cold and wet) because it turned to mush.

I just found another one! It's a smaller plant than the last one but once again, the soil is soaking wet! (damn you Bunnings!!) I really don't want this one to die :( What can I do? How do I know if it's already doomed? The leaves look fine-ish.. some of the older ones are yellowing a tad..? I dumped it out of the pot and found nice white roots around the edge of the rootball. Should I leave it? Repot it into better soil straight away? The soil looks horrible, thick black muck.
