Growing a lemon tree from a grocery store lemon. Good idea or Bad
Comments (23)Growing most types of fruit from seed is generally a bad idea. There is a high chance the fruit will not be as good as the parent variety. For those of you who are not aware of how this works, in nature fruit species can have a lot of genetic diversity from generation to generation. When a good producing tree is found, it then gets propagated from cuttings. People usually do not want to take the trouble of growing a fruit tree from seed when they do not even know whether the fruit will be good. Generally though, lemons produce truer to seed than oranges do. Not talking about citrus here, but for fruit trees in general, it is theoretically possible to breed fruit that produces truer to seed, but it takes many more generations of breeding. These are often traditional heirloom varieties that have been around a long time. Whereas the seed from a Navel orange will not really result in a Navel variety, some of these heirloom varieties can essentially be continually propagated from seed. The terms "heirloom", "true to seed", and fruit "variety" can all be very relative and ambiguous terms....See MoreRemoving branches good or bad idea?
Comments (9)Posted by yumtomatoes 10a/FLA (My Page) on Sun, Oct 16, 11 at 7:07 "On indeterminate varieties, we remove the bottom 3 branches each week. . . . We find that they do best with about 3-3.5 feet of foliage left on them." Why do you do this? What do you mean that they do best with only about 3-3.5 foot of foliage on them? Best how? It's just another method of cultivating tomatoes. We keep the vines suckered back to a single main stem and, once they begin to ripen the first fruits, we pull off the bottom 3 branches every 5-7 days. This causes the vine to produce 3 more branches in order to compensate for the loss. Since most indeterminates grow a flower cluster every 3-4 branches, this means they produce additional clusters of fruit. Like I said: We find that, on a single vine, 3-3.5 feet of foliage is about optimal to support a large number of fruit clusters without giving extra room for insect and other infestations. We leave the fruit exposed for easy picking and best ventilation in the greenhouse. It may seem counterintuitive but each leaf requires energy from the plant to sustain itself. At some point, the plant uses so much energy for vegetative growth (sustaining the foliage) that it diminishes the energy that can be used for reproductive growth (flowering and fruiting). We wait until the vegetative stage is well established and then start removing some of the leaves to keep it in the reproductive mode. It's just one technique among hundreds of techniques. It works best for long growing seasons or when you've got your plants started very early and you want to harvest from one plant for a long time....See MoreProLine Range Hoods -- good or bad idea?
Comments (35)I strongly urge that you do not buy Proline. I recently purchased a Proline insert for my custom hood. I had the hood built around the specs for the Proline insert. I researched liners and was intrigued by videos put out by Proline. I actually called the company to get more information on a liner. After speaking with a Proline rep they convinced me that this would be a good liner. I was concerned about the low price, but the rep assured me that was a promotional price, and they wanted to get reviews on the product. My review: TERRIBLE, MISTAKE, CHEATED. Model: PLFL CL 3416D. The description of this liner is that it is quiet. FALSE. Stand next to a jet engine during takeoff...that is how loud it is. If you intend to have a conversation in the same room, be prepared to yell at each other and even then you might not be heard. This liner is unusable if you intend to be in the same room. It is so loud you can hear it outside the house. The boast "runs at a maximum noise level of 4-5 sones, or the volume of a quiet conversation, meaning that it is extremely quiet" right on their website - it's an absolute lie. When I contacted Proline and asked for help with a solution to the problem their attitude was "too bad, you bought it, it's your problem". They said I installed it incorrectly. It was installed by my professional, licensed general contractor. The home inspector actually failed the final inspection in part because of the Proline liner. The inspector said air was blowing back down into the cooking area. I found mounting holes in the housing for the fans that wa blowing air back down the liner. I had to cover them with duct tape. I remodeled my kitchen and bought a custom hood. The hood was built around the dimensions for this liner. Now i am stuck with it. IT IS ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. Buy a Venta Hood or Z-Line...don't buy a Proline. Junk and no support. Beyond disappointing. My plan now is to gut this piece of junk, purchase a remote blower and figure out how to install it into the attic since I am stuck with this junk. Seriously, do not buy this liner and don't do business with Proline...they make false claims on their website, they do not stand by their products and their customer support is no help at all." UPDATE: Proline has now changed their website on the sones rating. They duped me, maybe I have saved some other unfortunate soul from falling for their false advertising....See MoreCorner wall oven- good or bad idea?
Comments (23)I am currently designing my new kitchen. Going to the cabinet maker tomorrow. I'm hoping he will solve my measurement problem I AM putting in a corner wall oven and microwave. I just love this design although it is a wall eater. OK, my problem. I have a 27" oven (with it being 30 inches at the door. ) The mic measures 29". I am hoping that a 30" cabinet will do the trick. I still need to know how much wall space on each wall is going to be needed. It is about impossible to search and find an answer. This thread mentions 41" for a 30" corner cabinet, another site listed 45 and yet another was 50 something. Yikes. Update: I went to the cabinet guy today and he told me I needed 48" on each wall (from the corner) for a 30" cabinet. So come on people, what is the real answer to this question?...See MoreAnnegriet
