Rebuild Front Steps and Curb Appeal
First time posting here. I want some advice on my front porch steps. They are very old, and not the safest because it is hard to swing the door open when balancing on the stairs. I am planning to rebuild these with treated lumber then staining or painting them. However, after reading different forums and talking to friends, I am debating using composite decking instead. Any thoughts and opinions on which material is best? Also, I am planning to add a 36" landing, and make the stairs slightly wider (only by about 3") - the railings would come out of the center of the pilasters. Also, what style of balusters do you recommend? I was going to do something similar to my interior stairs, or possibly black metal. Please keep in mind that I will be re-painting the lattice/columns white, relocating the mailbox, and adding landscaping too :) Your thoughts and opinions about any aspect of the front steps or curb appeal tips are appreciated! Thank you!!

Comments (4)Agree with Creative Visual Concepts - those are the first two things that popped out to me: missing risers and missing landscaping. OP, are you wanting a front porch because you think it will add to curb appeal or that you want a covered front door? ETA: Also agree that the front door should be an accent color - the door itself, not the sidelites. You have many colors that would enhance the front and work with your siding and trim colors. Comments (5)Missing still are large chunks of the view that are important to the yard. You are not capturing the problem with steps in the photos. (They look like some kind of stained, textured concrete.) I would not have necessarily added them like that. But they are there so I wouldn't necessarily remove them. If your drive is too steep to walk on comfortably, the steps are probably actually useful. If they need a handrail is better judged on site, as photos can be very misleading about grade. Comments (5)wondering if someone WANTED a crafstman style and did the brick work, and never added the roofline? It looks like an overhaul if you want to continue the porch style to include the pillars. It would also require removing the portico overhang that already exists. How much of an investment are you thinking??? If it were mine, and I was replacing shingles, soon, I would replace the roof with a taller pitch. at that time, I'd add the required porch roof to accomodate the existing pillars and create a so called craftsman style. Is it worth the effort and expense??? Is the brickwork stable enough to re use?
