A variegata - Red Ring Milkweed - setting flower heads already!
Comments (6)Sandy, Sadly, I only have five left. My husband passed away last May and I didn't care for my garden as I should have last summer; nothing much mattered to me for a while. With the terrible heat and dry weather we had here, I lost some plants, including some of my young Red Ring. I'm trying to get the garden back in order but it is a mess right now. Getting old and can't work at a good pace anymore. But it gives me joy again so will keep at it. One viridis showing up here. I did have three but so far, only the one is up. I don't know how old they should be before blooming but I'd sure love to see one of their blooms in person. Good luck with your seed germination. I suspect, if anyone can get these seed up and thriving, it is you. Mary...See MoreAnother recipe request - apple rings
Comments (5)I have no idea where I got this recipe, but have been using it at least 40 years. I'm sure some on this list would say that makes it automatically suspect. But here it is anyway: Spiced Apple Rings Allow 1 1/2 pounds of apples per pint. Wash apples. Core. Slice into 1/4 inch thick rings. Treat to prevent darkening by standing in a dilute mixture of water and either lemon juice or vinegar. Dissolve 4 cups sugar in 1 quart water. Add red food coloring. Bring to boil and cook 5 minutes. Add apples and simmer ten minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Drain off syrup and bring to boil. For each 2 quarts syrup add 1/2 tbls whole allspice, 1/2 tbls cloves, 1 tsp nutmeg, and 2 tbls cinnamon bark, broken. Pack apple rings loosely in preheated jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Cover with boiling syrup. Remove air bubbles, adjust lids, and process in boiling water bath 15 minutes for pints, 20 mintes for quarts....See MoreAnother Quick Decision To Make: Where Exactly Is Your Towel Ring?
Comments (1)In one bathroom, the ring is 57 inches off the floor and 14 inches from the back wall. In another bathroom, it is 60 inches off the floor and 10 1/2 inches from the back wall. Whatever, you do, just be sure that your hand towels won't drag on the vanity counter. DH installed one like that for me once and it irritated me every time I saw it. I lived with it until I changed the wallpaper!...See MoreJanuary 2012- Ring out the old, ring in the new...

Since I didn't touch the epoxy (wore new workmen's cotton gloves), that isn't what caused my skin to react. It was on my face only. The lumps were below the skin surface. But, it was combined w/ paint; so the mix is maybe what did it? After the anti-biotics, my skin was as smooth as glass. And the project? A great success. I'd painted the porcelain wall tiles, tub, sink, toilet in my new apartment. Not only did it look custom-made, but it shone as if all new. Even scrubbing w/ scouring powder didn't mar the finish -- that's why epoxy is needed in the paint. People asked me if I'd had the bathroom remodeled...a neighbor saw it, did his w/ epoxy paint, too. In spite of my little debaucle w/it , I recommended it to everyone. Sarah Canary - Maybe one reason "Smilla's Sense of Snow" appeals to us so much is because we're both January babies? ... As to the characters -- I'm not having any problems keeping them straight in my mind. Could be because they have such different first and last names...makes it easier. Yes, I agree, the atmosphere is a big part of this story -- really sets the mood....See More- 9 years ago
