Are Christmas Cactus or Easter Cactus Better?
Comments (8)Never seen a CC (Schlumbergera x buckleyii) for sale. For some reason this year, EC's are at BBS's, readily available nationwide. Very cool! By CC, do you mean TC (Schlumbergera truncata - that stores sell 'en masse' during the holidays?) Since they are sold with labels that say "Christmas cactus," it would be natural to call them that, and one really needs the botanical name for comparing these plants. I've had an EC for about 2 years and it has bloomed numerous times, both while outside and inside, which I'm told isn't uncommon. OTOH, going by what I've read in anecdotes on these forums, since I just managed to get a cutting of CC via trade less than a year ago, would rarely bloom more than once per year. For that reason, I'd choose EC, but - why not get both and pot together if space is an issue? However, the link I've included below says TC and CC are supposed to bloom twice per year. Rare is a discussion about that happening, maybe because most peoples' plants need to come inside to much less light, IDK. I couldn't possibly choose between TC and EC, you shouldn't either. Although they are called cacti, know all 3 of these are epiphytic jungle plants, and really don't like bone-drying or baking in intense mid-day sun at all. So... you need 3 plants... Comments (8)I have a related question. I bought a Christmas Cactus that's in full bloom around Christmas for my mom. she over watered it and all flowers fell right away, but the plant is okay. I asked my mom to keep it in a bright place but away from direct sun light and keep it dry. We are in chicago and it's still very cold. I wonder when can we expect it to bloom again. Will it bloom twice a year, and how long does the bloom usually last? Am I doing the right thing to promote the next round of blooming?...See MorePlease help my Christmas Cactus!
Comments (22)HMMM, well, I am almost disappointed. Of course, the variety you named, I believe makes it a parent of a true Christmas Cactus. I thought for sure it was one from pictures and descriptions I had seen. Totally not upright in its growth, etc. Oh well, none the less, I do think it has been around for some time and it is pretty big. Plus it did bloom at Christmas through the first couple weeks of January. So, I am not going to tell it any different!!! I am going to give the re-potting a whirl this weekend and will keep my fingers crossed that I do not break much. Thanks for the details on what to do. Lastly, since it does hang down so much, and it looks pretty silly with it staked up like I have done. Do you use any of those florist type wire rings, or something like that for support? (Like a very small tomato cage that would follow the edge of the pot?) Thanks to everyone for the help and the ideas of how to treat my very pretty cactus. I can't wait to try my hand at getting it to bloom this Christmas. Hazel...See Morelimb dropped off my christmas cactus
Comments (4)Stuff the broken end into fresh potting soil. If possible, stuff at least one and a half sections into the soil. That way, there is a "node" below the soil line. The node is where the segment broke off "as if it were meant to happen." It is also the spot where new roots emerge. Water the piece of cactus as if it already had roots, not too much, but don't let the soil get bone dry. When you see new growth, there will be roots. I do not think the broken stem is necessarily a sign of stress....See MoreCrenda 10A SW FL
