Elm roots tore up for fence posts -- tree in danger?

My husband and I have an old elm (approx. 60 ft. tall) on our fence line. It is mostly in our neighbors yard. Anyway, we had an old fence removed and replaced over the weekend. The old fence went over the tree with just a notch cut at the bottom on our side to accommodate it. The new fence stops and then restarts with the tree in between. Our installer did a beautiful job cutting the fence to match the trunk's shape, but leaving room from the trunk to grow. However, I never considered that to do it this way meant added fence posts very near the tree. When he was done I found large pieces of what I believe to be tree roots in my yard. My question: Have we irreparably damaged the tree? I would think at its age and size it could withstand some root loss. It's also thrived with an old galvanized fence post lodged in its trunk.
