I have a telephone stand next to the bed in our guest room. Not very wide, but holds alarm clock, tissues, etc. Plus has an open shelf which is great for books, or for your guests to place things. Works for me!

The coloring is similar to the beige color you’ve used, the shade has some very subtle striping that would mimic your drapes and the way the shade filters the lighting is quite pretty. Personally I really like the nightstands. I think they go fine in the room and with your headboards and bedding. It is a more muted comfortable feeling. The navy of the benches seem too much for the rest of the color scheme. All of the elements together aren't cohesive. Also I really dislike the black table in the middle of the beds If you are intent on keeping the benches then I would change the side tables since you say that the bedding stays. You could either paint the side tables to match the headboard or you could go navy to match the fabric (navy would be my choice). I also agree with painting the legs of the benches to go with your head/foot boards.
