Have I missed the Boat...??
Comments (2)Well, you have missed the boat for daffodils and tulips in general; yes. Wait until summer and then look on several sites including John Scheepers, Dutch Gardens, Brent and Becky's, and Van Bourgondien. All of these firms carry many types of bulbs in general; and you will fid what you want at one of these. Not just yet; is all! You can look at these sites now and see what you can get in future. You just cannot order yet!...See MoreDid I miss the boat...
Comments (20)Hi Gail! I am so happy to see that you are still growing clivia. Are they not such a beatiful plant in and out of bloom? So easy to store somewhere until the spring comes back too! I personlly have noticed that mine bloom whether root bound or with room to grow. What I did notice was that the plants that are not with tight roots are all around better looking and more robust than that of the others, which also encourages bigger bloom! I also noticed that inner roots and those roots rubbing up/or surrounded and or strangled by others tend to rot away, even in an open mix when very tight. That is why I don't like letting them get too tight/root bound. The outer roots always seem to be the ones that thrive while teh inner ones can easily fall away in this setup. many times I loose some roots that tend to push themselves out of the soil and sit on top. I just stuck them all outside since they can take very cold temps in our very much appreciated open mixes. It is a myth that they don't like their roots disturbed, or that they have to be root bound to perform well in my case. Just watch for earwigs that set up shop in their crows deep within the leaves. Newgen: I use vinegar at every watering when I think of it. There are some that I know do just fine without being on the acidic side like Clivia and Fragran Osmanthus, along with Hoya which love lime. I would check out your plants needs and find out what range of pH they thrive in. :-) Al: As always great advice since I have learned from the best!:-0)))) Al, is there a great pesticide to use that will prevent erawigs and other critters from crawling into the deep crevice leaf joints near the crown? Thank you I heard that 'Seven' and or 'Diatomaceous' sprinkled into the deep leaf crevices that are attacked to the main trunk works wonders. Please, what is your take? Mike Have a happy day everyone!...See MoreIt is finally warm!!!
Comments (5)I use the fresh chips for just about everything - but mostly as the surface for foot paths instead of gravel. You just have to watch out for poison ivy mixed in when your chips come from a tree service company - it can cause problems if you move the chips around with your bare hands. My peas are about a month old - I started them in pots because I needed to work the soil more in the beds and it was just too wet and cold. So they will go in the ground this weekend. They are only a few inches tall now. I think a lot of stuff is late this year so you should still be able to plant peas. The bigger problem will be if we jump to summer without a mild Spring. If things stay cool we could get a large crop of peas, if it gets too hot too quick the plants will shut down early. The only things going strong in the garden at this point is onions onions onions (I may have over done it). Rhubarb is up and doing well and the strawberry patches have been thinned and spread out. Just about everything is going in the ground this weekend. Seedlings of cauliflower, broccoli, early tomatoes (Stupice), celery, lettuce and more onions are ready to transplant. Seeds for summer tomatoes, peppers, squash and odd ball stuff have been sown and just now starting to sprout. Fruit trees are blooming. Bees are buzzing. Things are about to get very busy....See MoreWell, I guess I'll just go...
Comments (30)Duane, the reason for dressing casually and the current charitable recipient are also on the sign, but in small print. I doubt that many people read it because many people complain loudly that my receptionist is wearing jeans. I'm not sure how her attire affects how she answers their questions at the window. Since many of them are on their way to jail or prison, you wouldn't think they were fashion experts, but I guess I'm wrong about that. Carol, I was an English major in college and my professor was quick to point out that we don't really speak English, we speak an Americanized version, something that evolved from English. As we grow and become more diverse, so does our language. Truthfully, it intrigues me to think of where many of our slang words and phrases came from. Many have Latin roots, others Arabic and some seem to be uniquely ours. Annie...See More- 9 years ago
