Yeah, Dracaena godseffiana is the name I'm still using. Dracaena surculosa is the other name; I'm not positive which is correct. The only problems I've had with mine have been my own fault: I've let them get too dry a couple times, which caused them to drop a bunch of leaves. They've also flowered for me a couple times, which isn't exciting, exactly, but it's kind of neat.

Sorry to hear about your mother. These plumes of flowers are characteristic of the genus Celosia. They are annuals and tender (zone 10-11) perennials. The perennials tend to be taller - so given the amount of foliage in the picture this could be Celosia spicata. Another popular species is the annual Celosia plumosa, which has several varieties of very vivid flower colors.

The crushed leaf didn't have a discernable smell, Nicole. I'm glad I didn't sniff too hard, because I'm so allergic to the nightshades. Can't be in the room if someone is peeling potatoes. I never heard of Shishito peppers, Bob, so I looked them up. The name would make sense, but the leaves look narrower. We'll let them keep growing--after I get them off my porch and onto my son's--and I'll report back when the flowers have produced some fruit. Thank you!
