Need help choosing second floor deck railing

Hi, we are redoing our second floor deck in Los Angeles and need to pick a new railing. We have two young children so safety is our #1 concern. I don't want to use wood because of termites and the deck gets a lot of direct sunlight. I looked at vinyl options but our contractor suggested a metal railing for strength. He does not think a vinyl railing is strong or safe enough for a 2nd floor deck railing. Any suggestions or advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

I understand your reasons for not wanting to use timber, but if you went with an exotic wood like Ipe or Cumaru, they're basically impervious to termites. They're also really strong. The direct sunlight would cause the color to go gray, but aside from that the railing wouldn't suffer any structural damage.

I can't imagine termites being much of a problem on a 2nd story, or maybe it's a regional thing? Your house is probably termite-protected anyway. Since you mentioned that it gets direct sunlight, think about how hot that metal will get. I'd go with wood and stain it.

Why do you think they have a squadron of sailors constantly scrubbing down the mahogany decks of the old ships? No maintenance doesn't exist. Even stainless steel needs the salt cleaned off of it. You can leave off the varnish and let the wood gray naturally. It won't rot. That's why it was used in the first place. The varnish is merely cosmetic. It will still require periodic cleaning though for the longest life. Or, you can give up the ocean life with all of it's expensive issues like worrying about hurricanes, flood insurance, and mahogany maintenance, and move to a condo some place well inland. There won't be any exterior maintenance with that for you, you'll just be paying for that every month in the condo fees.

I really like that!! You may be right that it is better done in a new build, but it's certainly a question I can run by one of our contractors. The post I mentioned would not be at the bottom tread so the design of a continuous handrail would have to bypass the post to get to a newel at the bottom tread and there would need to be a guard at the new opening whether it be solid, balusters, etc. At first glance it seems a potentially messy solution. Perhaps the handrail could be at the other side and the guard could terminate at the post. The bottom tread should have had returns at each side. Its looks like a abasement stair in the entryway.

A wooden railing is definitely the better choice. Vinyl railings wouldn't be suitable for the second floor. You could also consider composite railing; it is strong and durable too.

Are you looking to do pickets , glass or cable? We do almost all aluminum railings in Washington state, with stainless steel cable being the majority. We may not get as hot as you in California , but have never had an issue with it getting too hot. Definitely less maintenance.
