Tongue & Groove Pine
Comments (4)Richard, thank you for your reply. I will be that's it. I remember that it wasn't "flat" --- dull was the word. The store has been gone for at least ten or more years and I then found a BM dealer nearby so have been using that brand of paint. I will have to search out a P&L dealer. I was thinking as well to lightly sand. I know some of the grain was raised from the last time. I know I will not get out some of the water spots, but sanding way down will make an even bigger mess. I am not sure when wood "ages", how deep the color turn is. I will use the dull again. I am hoping to just do the walls. The ceiling is pretty high, and I would like to avoid that - so another coat of the same on the walls should do the trick. Thanks for the response....See MorePaint or refinishing MCM wood tongue and groove wall ideas
Comments (32)Solid wood paneling is a classic, very valuable and cannot be replaced. I'd do something to keep that. I agree that the original aesthetic of the wood was to add warmth with all the natural hard materials like stone, slate, iron, etc. Depends on how much of a purist you want to be with the aesthetic. The original design is flexible as to what colors and stains would work. You could paint too. The only real crime would be to tear out something that is as valuable as real wood paneling. It was even expensive back in the day when it was installed. It has value because it is high quality and beautiful. I would seek to do something that retains the pluses. If you want to maintain your house as an homage to the middle of the last century, then obviously "restore" rather than "redo." Oh, and just a ponder, is that two story fireplace material original? Or was it originally brick too? Love your house BTW! Very elegant....See MoreTo paint pine tongue and groove room or not.
Comments (8)Is the paneling tongue and groove and installed vertically? Mostly flat, then a narrow round, then a shallow dip, then another narrow round? If so, it's Pickwick paneling. It seems to be hated and loved in ten year cycles. No kidding. I've had clients who wanted every disgusting plank ripped out and others who would spend any amount of money to save every beautiful piece. I believe the finish on the old 1930s-1940s planks was amber shellac, but there's no telling what kind or how many additional finishes have been put on over the years. Comments (3)I made the mistake of using pine tongue and groove for the ceiling on my sunporch. It never occurred to me that today's pine tongue & groove has knots. My idiot painters painted them, the knots showed. I made them take down the small amount they had installed and use BINS primer on them and then two coats of paint. They did so, but nearly 3 years later, there is still a bit of knot bleeding coming through in a couple of places. Not sure I have the strength to deal with this now. I DID learn from this and had them put Azak tongue & groove on the ceiling of my small front porch. We painted it Haint Blue as we did the sunporch ceiling. It was an excellent choice for that area....See Moremillworkman
