To paint pine tongue and groove room or not.

Recently purchased this home. Uncovered carpet, paneling and ceiling tiles to find this beautiful pine tongue and groove EVERYWHERE. also has oak floors. The studs on the far end are coming down to open to kitchen. My medium dark wood dining table will be at the far end as well. the dark ceiling is making the ceiling feel very low. what to paint, whitewash, stain?? Thanks for any help.

Do you mean pine tongue and groove paneling? Knotty pine, perhaps?

Common pine, with knots and checks, has to be sealed first with shellac before painting, or else the sap will continue to leak out and the knots and checks will discolor and show through the paint. Pine has a high moisture content and is prone to warping. It's also very soft and dentable. Select pine is knot-free but costs more. Popular is a hard wood, more dent resistant and might be a better solution for you and your boys. Worth comparison shopping! :-)

I like the look now and wouldn't stain it, the problem with leaving it would be the way it coordinated with the wood floor. That said, I'd either leave it and change the floor color or make the contractor paint it. One question: Did the T&G sit in the house for two weeks with heat/AC running to acclimate it to the temp/humidity? If not, it's going to shrink or swell (probably shrink) when the house is closed up and heated/cooled. If you paint, you want to paint AFTER THAT. Otherwise, you'll have lines of unpainted pine showing through. The house will be near finished and the contractor will say "You really don't notice it from down here" and won't address the issue.

Painting the boards -- properly prepped -- is the obvious answer -- but do consider whether or not you might want to keep part of it as is, especially if the kitchen is linked to a dining area that is also pine. Kitchen walls can be coated with grease mist from frying that might not be as obvious on pine boards as other drywall so you'll need to make sure they're entirely clean before painting. I’m in the strong do not paint camp! The ceilings are so much a part of the house design. I do agree that I wouldn’t choose heavy or dark furniture & I would have large colorful area rugs. The lighting looks very yellow in the pictures & my preference is daylight color & dimmer switches all around. The two big square lights - what is all the trim around the edges of them? Looks like trees or something. I might change those out for something lighter in feel but I'd need to see a better view of them. They might be great - just can't see in picture.

Sad days. Not sure why my photos are not showing. Yes it is knotty pine. Not sure if it’s considered paneling. I guess so. It’s like what people call ship lap. Maybe when I get to my computer instead of the phone I can make the photos show. It’s a lonng livng room with knotty pine walls and ceiling and oak floors. All need refinishing/paint/stain etc.

Is the paneling tongue and groove and installed vertically? Mostly flat, then a narrow round, then a shallow dip, then another narrow round? If so, it's Pickwick paneling. It seems to be hated and loved in ten year cycles. No kidding. I've had clients who wanted every disgusting plank ripped out and others who would spend any amount of money to save every beautiful piece. I believe the finish on the old 1930s-1940s planks was amber shellac, but there's no telling what kind or how many additional finishes have been put on over the years. Take a sample to a good painter or paint store and get their advice about prepping and refinishing.
