Feijoa tree buds dying

I have two new feijoa tree in pots next to each other. One tree is fruiting quite nicely but the other, I saw small buds beginning to fruit last month but now all of the buds are gone but tree seems healthy. I inspected and found a bunch of little buds that are dried and fell off. Any idea what's the issue? It's probably too late now to do anything for it to fruit this season but would like to do better next season.

By buds I assume you mean the tiny immature fruits at the base of the blossoms. Perhaps one tree is more mature. Are they the same variety of feijoa or are one or both seedings? If they are different varieties, did they bloom at the same time? Make sure they are getting equal water--it can be very hard to evenly moisten soil in a pot.

It is normal for some early stage fruits to fall off, but you would expect both plants to behave similarly.

Correct, look like tiny fruits. I purchased both from the same farm, very similarly size as well so i assume they're the same variety. They're about 7ft tall so quite mature I think. Both bloom at the same time.

I have them on drippers with the same exact head on them. The taller of the two is actually the one not fruiting well.

Avo's are very suseptable to root rot. I'd guess that 90% or more of tree loss, especially new trees, is from that. Too much water. once you have lost one tree to it in a planting area, the next tree will have a very high chance of dying from it to (it's prevalent in the soil now), so be sure to try a spot several feet away if you try again. good luck

Happens alot to my lime. It takes too much energy developing fruit so it aborts undeveloped fruits until there is a balance.

Kumquats can alternate bear, so when it was in the ground, probably nothing was wrong. Doubtful you had "bad soil", just needing to be fertilized, and watering needed to be adjusted properly (not too much, not too little). The potting medium you're using is most likely much too dense, retaining too much water, and, if allowed to dry out, becoming hydrophobic (won't absorb water, just runs through the container). So, watch for that. And, it may take a year or so for your poor tree to recover from all the transplant shock, so give it some time if you plan to keep it in a container. Water appropriately, fertilize frequently, but be sure to, on occasion, flush out the container to remove built up salts (to prevent burning). Patty S.

You might want to go on the Florida forum although this is a native outdoor plant for that warm zone. Is it possible it's a problem with humidity? (not enough) What I read on google sites, the sea grape is easily sprouted directly into the earth so if it grows roots that easily you might be right about the potted roots being crowded. If it can't easily form the smaller water absorbing rootlets it might not be getting enough moisture both above and below the soil. Another thing, is the window site any sunnier than in previous years (loss of a tree or hard trimmed shrub)?

If they were not sold as a named variety, and nurseries often charge a premium for this, they might be seedlings -- unless that farm does not sell seedlings.

Otherwise too soon to tell, could just be natural variation of two plants in the same year. Try running your fingers or a small brush through all the blooms, moving pollen around next year, this is commonly done to feijoa.
