If you do not have the equipment to view the eclipse, there is a something you can do: Make a pin hole viewer. Put a small hole in thin cardboard; The material in a manila file folder works well. The material should be opaque, thin, and capable of having small burr free holes. Put the hole near the center of a piece that is about 1 ft square or larger. Prepare several with various size holes so that when the eclipse event occurs, you can quickly experiment with the various sized holes and choose the one that gives the best result.

When the eclipse begins, hold the card a foot or so above a good viewing surface and you should be able to see the outline of the eclipse within the shadow of the card on the ground. Vary the height of the card to find the best effect. You will see the outline of the sun with a notch taken out by the moon.

At some point during the eclipse, you may observe that shade trees are casting strange looking shadows on the ground due to this pin-hole effect. A tree with many leaves will have a number of places where tiny shafts of light peek around the edges of leaves. This creates multiple pin-hole viewers and the tree shadow will be peppered with small, notched circles of light.
