Windows Design Dilemma Exterior

Window placement and size

I'm having a ranch style home built and I'm having issues with window placement and size.

The bedrooms are approx 10x12 and we have (2 ) 3 'x 6' windows in them as well as our living room which is 17x20

Would it look odd from the outside to have only 1 window in the bedrooms?

Also for some reason they aren't centered in the bedroom. It was mentioned to me that it is because of bed placement but it still is odd to me.

Should I leave it alone or change ?

It looks like the designer tried to space the windows uniformly across the front, centering the master window in the master bedroom, then placing the other windows without regard for the interior.

I'm sure 1 window in each of the bedrooms, centered on the bedroom, would look fine.

I would consider adding a window in the family room, making 3 instead of 2, and centering them on that wall -- between the edge of the fireplace and the door. Unless you are placing a couch against that outside wall, you might make those windows taller as well.

Those big porches look nice, but I wonder what they will be used for? Especially the one in the front. They will also tend to darken the interior, and will certainly increase your cost.

I'm sorry, I thought I attached a photo. Here it is. I'm referring to the windows in the front of the house.

The of the window would be 5 ' or greater above the bottom of the tub. it would be difficult if the shower head is on the same wall as the window. It would not have to be tempered if it is where I said. you would want a vinyl or glass block window is think and properly installed. Don't think it see much water if like the first picture.

Windows on Washington Ltd, Yes, of course, there are going to be formal drawings, but I'm trying to decide how I want it to look, what the heights of the windows can be etc. I do understand your point that framing etc dictates much of this, but I'm working on ideas and aesthetics. Then when I meet with the person doing the plans I will have firm ideas on what I want it to look like. Do you have a suggestion for a planner I might use? thank you

Why is the top height of the window set at 8? I think what you should do is draw an inside to-scale elevation and see what the various options look like. One option you could consider for dining is to have banquette seating in the alcove which would require less depth for the table, and that would indicated yet another window arrangement. There are downsides to banquette seating but people sit at it all the time in fine dining restaurants.

So I need a to scale floor plan nothing in it except for showing the window placement. The sizes of the appliances all mwasurements clearly marked on graph paper posted here in a comment DO NOT start another post .I like my trash under my sink since to give up storage for trash never makes sense to me I take my trash out ecery day who wants that sitting any longer I have a pullout with 2 small bins one for recycling and one for trash , I also have my DW pods in a cintainer under there and my compost . I have back to back sinks in my kitchen since hubby and I cook together so he does prep on the side with the pullous and I cook on the other side .Counter depth frisge lose about 10% of the storage but IMO so much better . I run a catering biz from my home with a counter depth fridge. I do suggest better glass storage in side the fridge for leftovers they can be stacked . there are many ways to make kitchens functional for how you cook. Post the plan here and see what can be done. BTW since almost everyone ends up in the kitchen I do not have a big issue with seeing the kitchen you just need to be a bit tidier when cooking I use my DW quick cycle a lot when working in the kitchen it takes 23 minutes so can often do 6-8 loads a day when I am busy. I do all my pots in there too.

Thank you for your opinions. I was also considering changing the window in the living room, but was thinking of doing (2) 4'x6'. I feel like such a big room needs a bigger window. Thoughts? Although... I might just do as you originally said, and just put 3 windows there.

Yes, we are aware they are large porches. This ranch style home has been a dream of ours for years, and where we live, big porches are utilized and enjoyed. So, we know that they will add cost, but we think we will be glad we did it.

Elevations? You state "windows" and sizes but not what type of windows? Casements, Double Hungs, Picture Windows, Sliders? Help us help you..........

this is the front of the house. I think this is actually 7ft windows, which we changed to 6ft. But in this photo, he changed the main window from the licing room to (2) 4ft windows... which I think I'm going back to.

Have you sat down and really tried to visualize what it will be like living with this floor plan on a day to day basis? In addition to it being dark because of the porches (hopefully you don't enjoy growing houseplants with sun requirements!), I'll just tell you the things that I see that would have a negative impact on the way I use a house.

master bedroom:

noise and privacy issues with it opening to the main (and only) living area and the front porch. How am I going to sleep if people are still up watching tv in the living room? What if I need a quiet place to rest in the afternoon because I have a migraine?

master bathroom:

privacy, light and view issues because of the window location (imagine what having a view of the carport will actually look like)

living room:

-since seating will have to be floated in the room, floor receptacles will be a must (but where to put them?)

-where will the Christmas tree go?

kitchen:

-there's no room for a dining table

-two-level island is not only uncomfortable to sit at, but it renders the countertop space useless for things that require a large, uninterrupted surface area like gift wrapping, rolling out dough, sewing, school projects, etc.

storage:

-where will I put my Christmas decorations? My tools? What about coats and sporting gear? ...there's no coat closet!

Ask for the windows to be drawn as you wish and see how they look.

I'd prefer all the windows maintain the 80" head height of the door.
