Can I pot peach and plum trees now in the season?

I want to buy some dwarf white peaches and dwarf Japanese plums from Starkbros. I plan to raise them in pots. Would now be an ok time to do so? I know its in mid summer but I can always keep the pots in shade until the roots get a little more established. Hows that sound?

Are you talking about bare root trees or potted trees. Bare root trees may may break dormancy at all in your area this late of a growing pseason.

for plum, many of them need cross pollination. You either need two different varieties of plums or a multi grafted plums. There are other nurseries like Cummins, Raintree, Adam County nursery that offer good product. This is not the time to plant but can be the time to check what they offer for next spring or even for fall planting.

I believe they are bare root. But why would bare roots not have any leaves? I think I will plant them in fall. Would October be a good time?

An update, 5 days later, they're beginning to ripen up nicely, and we made a pie yesterday. The interior color is still a light shade of green, the exterior color remained the same. It would seem my issue, here in the dry climate, is maintaining more moisture around the picked fruit as they do seem to shrink. We had a commercial, organic orchard 30 miles west of here a few years back, that didn't have refrigeration. I visited several times during the harvest season to buy their culls. They picked them unripe, boxed them, and shipped them to Texas, and they ripened along the way or something. I wish I knew more about it. Probably some high-tech way of checking brix levels, or maybe just squeezing 'em. Anyway, I have 5 or so bushels, and we'll get something out of it. I've caught 3 raccoons in 5 days as well. They seem very well fed.

That looks like a pretty extensive mulched area- really pumps up the vigor. How come you didn't fruit them this year, they certainly look like they were big enough. If they did bear good crops than you definitely need to think about how to ratchet down that growth. One way is several prunings during summer, although when trees are in fruit you have to be careful not to prune too much to where you cut down on sweetness of fruit. You should certainly prune all your most vigorous uprights ASAP as well as 2-year wood higher in the tree than you want fruit. I don't think you have to worry about when you prune there and I'm confident it's OK now.

We really do need to see photos to determine what is going on, otherwise we are just guessing and you then may be following advice that is not appropriate or could even prove harmful. FWIW, horticultural oil is NOT a suggested treatment for borers.......if that is what you have. Because the larvae tunnels (bores) into the wood of the tree, any sort of topical approach has to be carefully considered and timed to have any effect. The bugs are not inside the bark....they are inside the tree and it often requires a systemic (seldom recommended for edibles) to ensure effective control. And the appearance of sap - aka gummosis - can arise from a multitude of conditions, not all of them serious or requiring treatment. Photos, please!!

Yes, crescent moon shape is plum curculio marks. Need to spray. If you want to go mainly organic, look up kaolin clay called Surround. Spray first at petal fall stage and every 10-14 days depending on how much rain you get. Look up Spinosad, another pesticide and see if you like to use it. Plum curculio is enemy number one for stone fruit like plums and peaches. Another pests are Oriental fruit moth, stink bugs, coddling moth, etc. Nothing much you can do with canker. A healthy tree will heals itself. During a dormant season, consider spraying copper as fungicide and bacterialcide as a preventative measure.

You can order a fruit tree from Stark's now, if they have the one you want in stock, but I am pretty sure that they will not ship until latter autumn. Bare root trees are dormant, therefore they won't have leaves.

In your area it is probably best to wait until you can place your order for spring shipping. That will give your tree plenty of time to settle into your pots before going through winter.
