Need help growing cacti/succulents from seeds
Comments (43)If you have no mold than there's no need to uncover yet. By about 2-3 month mark is when I uncover. It honestly just depends on what's going on in the container. My Ferocactus are uncovered now. Along with a couple other containers that had mold growing. As soon as I uncover the mold stops. I just have to remember to keep moist everyday. Instead of having them covered and not having to worry about them as much. I still have three covered. I will uncover those last three in a month or so. I don't like to keep them covered longer than three months because I feel like they start to need air circulation. Everybody does it different I'm sure. Whatever works:). As long as you keep them moist with some filtered light, they should be fine. All my seedlings are in a north west frosted bathroom window. This would never be enough light for most mature cactus, but the seedlings don't need direct sun. You can see the window in the above pic. That's how much light they get till about 3:30-4:00pm then as the sun is going down they get some sun. I don't know if you've seen this YouTube video, but this guy is germinating Astro seeds. I get the vibe he doesn't keep them covered long at all, but you can see he keeps them very moist because once you uncover the water evaporates pretty quickly:). Video:)...See MoreHelp identifying/care advice for CVS cactus and succulents
Comments (15)Hi Chelsea. If no-one else answers, create a new thread. I reckon that more people would be likely to check it out. Lovely looking plants :) Funny how it's so similar to this thread, even the plants lol. I could give only some advice but I think it would be better not to do anything with the plants until your ready with everything at hand from the suggestions from others here that know a lot more than me. First thing I'd do is to get some pots that have large drainage holes. You might be advised to get one a bit bigger for the bottom right one. You'll definitely be told/advised to get a pot for the one in the glass. Also the mix advised above is what probably most here use. Half cactus and Succulent potting mix and half perlite, but the Perlite needs to be sieved or rinsed first. Both can be bought at garden centres and places like that. I hope it all goes well for you and your lovely plants :)...See MoreNeed help identifying this cacti.
Comments (11)Thanks to all that have helped us identify this succulent. My mother has had this plant for several years and she said no flowers ever bloomed. My Aunt lives at sea level, her "flapjack plant" is very green, and not in full sun. Both plants are in pots, maybe one day we will transfer to the earth. She brought them from the island of Molokai many years ago on her annual Memorial Day visit. There is a rare Hawaiian Portaluca plant similar in leaves, but it grows quite tall, and blooms yellow flowers. These plants seem to grow in clusters and are so unique, each time I visit, I sit and just wonder about its history....See MorePlease help me identify my succulents and cacti!
Comments (6)I can only ID the last one positively, it’s a Portulacaria afra variegata. Please don’t grow any plants and especially a cacti or succ in a pot without any drainage holes, and it’s not advisable to keep those glass pebbles around them either, they won’t allow the mix to dry out properly. The soil mix they’re in looks very peaty and water retaining, ideally it needs changing else you will get problems with rotting as from what you have said you are new to plants. Please change all the soil and replant in a simple free draining mix of half good quality c/s mix and half sieved perlite or similar. All need placing in a very sunny spot and the Port a. will need slightly more water than the others. Plenty of additional info if you type a suitable question in the search box at the top and tick to search the c/s forum, come back here if you’re stuck though.
