Finishing touches on new apartment
We've just moved into a beautiful apartment and some of our furniture is new, some is old... and some is Ikea.
I need help in pulling the look together mostly in the living room. The coffee table at the moment is made of two halves of Ikea's Vittsjo side tables with a large black tray between to make it look more "designer"! It works well, and we like it but I feel the side tables on each side of the sofa now look too small without their extensions.
Should we invest in a beautiful new coffee table? If so what kind would work? Gold and glass? Black wood?
Or should we leave it as it is as we both like the look, but buy more Vittsjo to finish the side tables. But in that case, would it be Vittsjo overkill as the shelves on each side of the piano are also Vittsjo!?
I also need a rug under the coffee table: cow, furry, black? And curtains for the long sliding doors that open onto the terrace and a matching blind for the small side window. I've always thought curtains are old-fashioned but I think this room looks unfinished without. Have never had any so not sure where to start: colour, style, texture, print?
The kitchen island needs a light fixture but I'm stuck as the dining table nearby will have the three Tom Dixon beats (not put up yet) so I don't want to overdo the lighting there.
Any advice on the above would be great!

6 years agoCelery girl: that's brilliant! Thank you so much. You are absolutely right that the painting is too high. I'll try and swap out a few of the small boxes etc. The one at the end is a beautiful Chinese lamp but maybe not big enough

Comments (13)nick, it's a cute space, but it feels off to you because your proportions are too small. get those poor little plants up on something so they can 'see' the light! ( in the dining area) your tv console should be larger. (and that artwork is wrong for over the tv. place that over your sofa (only 4" above the back of the sofa please) and take the smaller artwork and place it to the side of the tv. Try and do something like this: something with legs might look a little better. (and look at how all of these rooms are set up and decorated. rugs, plants, lamps, tables, etc. ) mount your tv to the wall and use a longer console. any of these pictured would work for yours (art is too high behind the gray sofa) ideas for room decor. you want art behind your sofa that is 2/3rd's the size of the sofa. Freedomplace1- those lamps are really nice I just think I need something more sturdy because my girls are crazy sometimes. The ottoman is a great idea I’m going to keep that in my mind. Comments (22)Rug looks nice, yeah it could be bigger but will work. Sadly the coffee table looks like an elephant in the room so when there's a chance get something more open, perhaps glass top style to keep the space more open. I would look at moving the middle artwork to above the piano, then having the other two above the chair. You may prefer to not cover your windows which is certainly your choice, but if you want to add there, consider bamboo in the shades of the wood on your sofa and chair, that could really make a difference of warmth in the space....See More

You might consider a stool that doubles as a receptacle for shoes and slippers and such. Ideal place for sitting to put on and remove footwear.

6 years agoMy reference to the low silhouette was to suggest a low profile basket almost like a tray with little sides so the basket doesn't become part of the decor as much as containing the slippers...and keeping them organized..and also easy to slip on and off without having to dig them out...and lastly to expose the most beautiful carving at the bottom of the screen better...
Too bad about hubby but I expected it may be hard for some (maybe most)to get the esoteric of the unusual twist on the screen...
And....who wants to see something that bugs you...the minute you walk in the door!...
I feel a kindred spirit in your space...and while we have different styles I thought I would share a pic of my in kitchen pantry...which changes color as the sun passes through ....throughout the day
