You need to slice from both directions, as the sealant is in a corner. As you make the cut in the second direction, pull the strip of caulk away. It's very time-consuming. Casey

Windowsonwashington, that's a lot of replacement windows. And I agree with you. If the glass in an SDL window breaks or scratches, or the insulating glass seal fails, most replacement window manufacturers will replace the entire sash. But if you happen to have a window like the one in the picture, or some other historic window, let's say with unique stain or paint, hardware, restoration glass, or other design features, replacing the sash is easier said than done. Perhaps that's why the other manufacturers you mention provide such a short warranty. Like the Woodstone folks say, using SDL on a vinyl or aluminum replacement window is one thing. But if you're investing in accurate historic windows for a period home, you better think twice about using SDL windows. After all, if I wanted my house to look good so I can sell it one day, or leave it to my children, I sure don't want to have to tell everyone that the windows have to be replaced every ten years'or even every 20 years for that matter; unless, of course, I happen to be in the window replacement business.

Clad wood in a coastal environment is a bit of a risk in my opinion. I would prefer to see a substrate that is altogether unaffected by moisture and salt in this case. You can get the look of wood and the SDL in a bunch of other formats and that is what I would lean towards. Fiberglass would be choice number one for me.

I doubt they ever had the capabilities to make the true divided lights. Are the gas/argon energy efficient. If so I just don't think they can make true divided light windows effciently. Each light would be its own little window with its own seal and frame. If divided lights, not simulated,is what you truely wanted and are going to accept them anyway I would have them do an extreme deep discount, in writting, before you let them install them. What are they going to do with them? My brother in-law has purchased the mis-order windows for about $100-200 each from warehouses selling these rejected/mis-ordered windows. Did they take a large down payment from you? Is it written in the contract re the true divided lights? I have a feeling the salesperson wasn't mis-informed just not telling the truth to you no matter how "nice" they were. Sorry, I don't know about pricing but I doubt there are many places that do true divided lights unless they specialize in restoration. My sister had anderson windows with the wood that was inside the house on the windows, not between the glass. They look more like the true divided glass but the snap into place. She can take them off to clean windows on the inside but is a real pain and has taken them off most of her windows(was a new house) Sorry, I think your salesperson was not being truthful or is a complete idiot.
