Try Zero Odor spray. Neutralizes any smells.

I put large rugs on the cement driveway...use a BIG scrub brush or push broom and a cheap dish soap....like Awesome. Then hang the rug over my deck railing to dry. Should be enough to handle a typical "dog" smell.

Baking soda and then vacuum.

I'm curious as to a couple things.

What odor removal concept you had in mind short of cleaning it? You might try dusting it with baking soda, scrubbing it in with a dry broom, let it sit for a few hours, and then vacuuming it up. Baking soda is a universal fungicide, so if the odor is fungal it will work for that. It is also absorbent, so it might get most of the doggie oils out. If the odor comes from urine or saliva, it will need some sort of cleaning.

How do you think the odor got into the rug if the dog was not on the rug?

Pet stores sell odor neutralizing sprays that work really well. There is also a product called carpet fresh that you sprinkle on , let sit awhile then vacuum. Made for pet odors. Makes vacuum exhaust smell great and very reasonable cost.

I do what Nicole does. If you don't want to clean it, maybe hang it outside or lay it flat somewhere in the sun for a day or two. UV rays seem to get rid of most odors. I had a musty quilt and nothing I did got rid of that odor. Hung it on the deck railing for a couple of days and it smelled like new again.

I like to take them outside and wash with soapy water, let soak, rinse with pressure washer, soak again with a vinegar solution, rinse again and then let dry over a rail for a few days.

I would just use some baking soda.

Arm and Hammer makes a powder for carpets that removes pet odors. In the store I work at, we keep it near the pet supplies.

I should mention that the rug was professionally cleaned a few weeks prior to having the dog, which is why I hesitate to go that route. If only I had known......

As for soaping it myself, soap residue left behind is a concern as I've heard it makes it soil quicker.

I know so many of you have dogs and surely have found effective ways to control those smells. What about dogs on furniture? Constant cleaning doesn't seem feasible. I had considered misting with vinegar, and sprinkling with baking soda. Just thought I would check here first to see what has worked or not worked.

I only invite dog lovers over and they don't notice. I do launder the dog beds/covers once a month, and the sofa the dogs are allowed on to help me watch TV has one of those washable pet covers.

Trust me, you would have to be "nose blind" - even a dog lover would notice.

Odorban in a carpet scrubber is great. Carpet Fresh works good too if you don't mind a strong perfume smell for a while and the white powder all over the carpet until you vacuum it up.
