Wall under the stairs
Comments (2)At about the 10th riser you can effectively use the space below a stair assuming there is no stair below it. If the building code is the IRC, the smallest dimension of the winder tread is 6 inches so in your case the bottom run of the stair would need to be extended 6 inches into the room and the upper part would need to be extended 6 inches as well. Therefore a single winder saves 10 inches and adds 12 inches. It should be eliminated so the landing can be square and unbroken unless you have a different building code or no code....See MorePlease help with design of under the stairs closet.
Comments (2)You should be able to do some kind of closet under there, with a pull-out at the lower end and maybe even a traditional closet for the rest, depending on measurements. You just need to keep enough studs for the structural integrity of the stairs themselves, so you don't want to yank it all out! As for color, just have the doors finished wood and paint them to match your trim (currently white). Then, whatever color you end up with for the other finishes in the entry, it will either match or be easy to repaint. Don't make everything contingent on making all the decisions at once or you'll pass out from overload....See MoreNeed help with ugly wall under stairs
Comments (19)Wow! I am so thankful for all of your help. Such thoughtful and creative ideas. I will start with the practical, like replacing the vacuum cover, and adding movable art over the thermostat. Elle, your observation about the height of the peak vs. ceiling in adjacent room is so astute. I would never have thought of that. I was wondering whether I should repeat the colour on my accent wall on that corner. I'm going to look into the vertical piece of art as well. You all have such amazing brains! I love the plant idea too! Beth, you put so much time in helping me, your ideas are awesome! Not sure I'm ready to paint the wooden staircase. I think it would look amazing, but I always fear painting something that is a permanent wood feature, like I'm desecrating trees or something, lol! It's actually a very light wood. I do wish I had the guts; the pics you added are very cool. Will give that some thought for sure. You all have given me such great ideas. Exactly the inspiration I needed. Thanks so, so much. Was my first design dilemma help request, and I'm really bowled over! Happy New Year everyone!...See Moreneed wall decor ideas for foyer staircase wall
Comments (5)HI -- I do not like houses that have these large open useless spaces . This is always a problem for noise and how to paint them and how to decorate . You would have to hire painters and the use of scaffolding and the high cost to do so and to maintain. That wasted square footage could be better used in the upstairs living areas . You could have some applied moldings in a square pattern or wallpaper for interest , or quilted fabric panels but some does not help with the sound . Tapestries or rugs or soft wall hangings helps a bit... as for a large painting that can be home made or the affect done with a wallpaper mural or a hired Artist . Maybe in the future consider having some of the area built in for useable square footage . That will add better value to the house ....See Morecole789
